Abstract

547,848. Anti-aircraft projectiles. PIESTRAK, C. S. Dec. 5, 1940. No. 17318. [Class 9 (i)] The front and rear parts 1,5 of an anti-aircraft projectile comprise bursting charges 2, 25 and are connected in a readily separable manner by a fusible metal ring 22. The two parts are also connected by a cable or the like 29, coiled within the hollow extension 3 of the part I, the front connection 30 being a swivelling one, so that when the parts become separated during flight, they will remain connected by the cable and will follow in tandem a spiral course. The two parts are exploded on impact or by time fuzes. The fuze-system comprises a base time fuze, the burning of which is initiated by the propellant-gas pressure impelling a striker 13 on to a cap 14, an adjustable ring of fuze composition 17, Fig. 2, in a rotatable plug 7, an annulus 19 and tubes 24 of composition, leading to an annulus 20 of heatgenerating composition by the burning of which the fusible ring 22 is melted. The composition 20 also ignites delay fuzes in tubes 35 leading to the forward bursting charge 2, and in similar tubes leading rearwardly into the bursting charge 25, to destroy the shell parts if they are not not otherwise explodes.
