547,149. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. June 8, 1940, No. 10051. Convention date, June 9, 1939. [Class 135] An automatic pilot for dirigible craft has the control exerted by gyroscope modified by an auxiliary control term derived from a spring- centralized inertia device mounted for oscillation about an axis parallel to the stabilization axis of the craft and provided with means for damping its oscillations in relation to the craft. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to the control of an aeroplane elevator 1 by a gyro-vertical 8. The elevator is actuated by a double-acting piston controlled by a piston relay valve the end faces of which are subject to the pressures in the conduits leading to the two ends of the power cylinder. This relay valve is actuated by a pair of opposed diaphragms 13, 131 each subject to a differential pressure controlled by a rotary semi-cylindrical valve 7 or 71. The valve 7 is actuated by the outer gimbal 81 of the gyrovertical while the valve 71 is actuated by inertia weights 23, 231 adjustably mounted on a lever 17 centralized by a spring 19 and coupled to an adjustable dashpot 21. In a modification the outer casing of the valve 7 is movable and is coupled by toothed gearing to the weighted lever 17. Specification 515,290 is referred to.
