Abstract

546,799. Pressure gauges. SIMMONDS DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, Ltd. July 14, 1941, No. 8861. Convention date, Jan. 8, 1941. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a casing, a chamber within the casing, a bellows housed within and closing the chamber, means for passing fluid to the inside of the chamber, means for passing fluid to the inside of the bellows, and valve controlled means connecting the insides of chamber and bellows actuated by the bellows. A pipe 22 connected at 24 to the top of a tank 2 containing liquid is connected to an air-tight casing 26 enclosing the gauge the pressure acting on the inside of an open-ended bellows 28 enclosed in a casing 16. A pipe 10 passes down through the liquid in the tank and has an opening 12 at the bottom. The other end of the pipe is bifurcated one branch 14 conveying fluid to act on the outside of the bellows 28 and the other branch 18 conveying fluid to casing 62 of a safety valve. A head 32 closing the end of the bellows has a stem 34 coned to engage a seating 38 in a lever 40 pivoted on a knife-edge 42. A second seating 44 in the lever is engaged by a cone plug 48 between which and a second plug 52 acts a spring 50 under compression which may be varied by adjusting the screw 54 and locking it by nuts 56, 58 to a bracket 60. The lever is connected by linkage 78 to a pivoted pointer 74 running over a scale 80. The safety valve 66 is usually pressed against its seating aver holes 72 by a spring 68 and the stem 70 of the valve is situated a predetermined distance above the lever 40. The pipes 10, 22 are connected by a passage closed by a valve 82 and communicates by a valve 86 and a pipe 84 with a source of pressure. Before every reading, the pipes are blown through by opening valves 82, 86. The pressure from the pipe 10 acts more quickly than that from pipe 22 and undue collapse of the bellows is prevented by the lever 40 lifting the safety-valve and placing the pipe 10 in communication with the interior of the casing 26.
