Abstract

546,564. Surface - hardening bombs &c. GOODWIN, J. T., and SHORTER, A. E. Jan. 17, 1941, No. 676. [Class 72] In the surface-hardening of bombs or like metal objects in the form of bodies of rotation of non-uniform contour the bomb &c. is mounted on a support with its axis vertical, and if desired rotated about the axis, and means are provided for causing relative vertical movement between the bomb &c. and the heating devices so that the latter operate progressively over the surface from bottom to top, a quenching fluid being then directed on to the heated surface and radial adjustment being produced on the relative vertical movement between the heating devices and the bomb &c. The bomb 10, Fig. 1, is mounted on a chuck 11 adapted to be rotated by gear 13 from a shaft 14 driven by a motor 15, the end 12 of the chuck being housed in a casing 16 attached to a platform 17 secured on the piston rod 20 of an hydraulic ram 21. The cylinder head 23 is provided with bosses 26 to receive the threaded ends 27 of pillars 28 which are secured at their upper ends by nuts 30 to an annular plate 31 and which pass through bosses 32 in the platform 17. Secured to the latter by bolts 34 and nuts 35 is a platform 36 to which are secured as many cams or templets 37 as there are fuel burners 38 which carry wheels 39 to engage the corresponding templets 38 and which are supplied from piping 40 carried by a platform 41 secured to the pillars 28 at 42. The platform 41 also carries a quenching ring 43. In a modification, Fig. 3, the bomb and templets are stationary and the burners are moved. The burners 81 and the quenching ring 79 are carried on a platform 74 which is adapted to be engaged and moved by elevating screws 66 driven by gearing from a motor 65. Rollers 88 on the burners 81 engage templets 82 which may be flattened at the end, as shown, so as not to overheat the extremity of the bomb &c. which is mounted in a chuck 51 which is rotated by gearing 53 driven by a shaft 54 from a motor 56 provided with a variable speed gear box 59. In a second modification, the heating devices are carried at one side by a scissor mechanism whose other side is controlled in position by a templet in the form of the bomb &c. the pivot of the mechanism being carried by an arm which travels in guides and is moved by a threaded member on the arm engaging an elevating screw. Specification 481,618, [Group XI], is referred to.
