Abstract

546,444. Hypodermic injection devices. WATSON, E. D., and EDMONDS, R. A. L. May 16, 1941, No. 6313. [Class 81 (ii)] A hypodermic injector comprises a collapsable container 1 for the dosage having its discharge end closed by a diaphragm 1b, a needle 2 the upper part of which is enclosed by a frangible seal 4 secured thereto and having one end disposed adjacent the diaphragm with a compressible jointing washer 6 disposed between such end and the diaphragm, diaphragm piercing means associated with the needle, and a connection 5 between the seal and discharge end of the container for securing them together. As shown the needle constitutes the diaphragm-piercing means and the connection 5 screws on to the end of the container and engages above a fused point by which the seal 4-a glass tube-is secured to the needle. When the injector is to be used, the connection 5 is screwed down on the end of the container until the end of the needle passes through the washer 6 and punctures the diaphragm 1b, the glass tube 4 is now broken off above the pressing 4c, the needle inserted into the patient and the container squeezed to expel the dosage. The connection 5 may have a bayonet-joint or frictional engagement with the end of the container and a stylus, extending through the needle with its outer end secured in the end of the glass tube 4, may be used for puncturing the diaphragm. The container may be of ellipsoidal or spherical configuration.
