[Class 135] [Also in Group V] The whole or part of a rubber article, e.g. a pneumatic tyre, is vulcanized by passing electricity through conductive rubber adjacent to or integral with the article subsequently to or concurrently with the application of external heat, e.g. by steam, to said conductive rubber. The external heat is applied to avoid local high current flow and overheating developing from small local differences of temperature owing to the great decrease in resistance with increasing temperature on initially heating unvulcanized, electrically conductive rubber. Internal heating by use of conductive rubber thus allows thick parts of rubber articles to be uniformly vulcanized. As applied to a pneumatic tyre 7 in a mould 4 additional heat is supplied to the beads 9 and the tread 9a by passage of electricity through an air bag 8 with thickened portions adjacent the beads, the valve-stem 2 and an electrode 12 being connected by a flexible conductor 13. When the mould 4 is used as an electrode, insulating pieces 5 may aid in directing the current flow.
