Abstract

Curing moulding compsn. incorporating electrically conductive materials dispersed in a non-conductive resin matrix is described. The material is moulded in a press having conductive upper and lower press tools with the ram moving in a non-conductive body. The tools are used as electrodes for passing an electric current through the moulding material to heat the material by resistive heating. Esp. suitable for moulding friction cpds., e.g. into brake pads or for curing rubber compsns. filled with e.g. smoke black. Heating/curing cycles are reduced by comparison with processes depending on thermal conduction via a resin matrix which is a poor thermal conductor. In an example, process was used to mould and cure a compsn. incorporating 12.1% phenolic resin; 15.6% graphite; 29.5% Fe powder; 14.8% Cu powder; 6.0% zircon; 16.1 % asbestos and 6.0% baryta.
