[Class 61 (iii)] Well pipe tongs comprising a tong lever 10 carrying at one end a pipe gripping head in the form of pairs. of pivoted links 11, 12, and 13, 14 has means for adjusting the point of suspension from the supporting wire 21 relative to the centre of gravity of the combined tong lever and head which centre may be shifted when the head is changed, consisting of a supporting arm 24 pivoted at 25 to the lever 10 and a strut 27 also pivoted to the lever at 28 near the head, its other end being connected by a bolt 37 to one of a number of holes 32-36 along the arm, the latter terminating in a suspension loop 26 having a transverse series of eyes 42 for transverse adjustment; the bolt 37 can be inserted in a hole 40 near the pivot 25 for securing the arm in folded condition when out of use. The lever is of symmetrical construction about its centre web 45 for reversibility and for the purpose of attaching a line thereto terminates in a cylindrical pin 56 to take the line loop enclosed in a guard device formed of four prongs attached to the pin alternately at opposite ends. Fig. 7 shows a modification wherein the supporting arm carrying the suspension loop 75 is formed of two telescoping parts 81, 79 secured by a set screw 83 and Fig. 13 shows a modification of the line attachment device comprising guard arms 106, 108 integral with the tong lever and a removable pin 111 secured by a bolt 115 to the tong lever.
