Abstract

545,207. Kinematograph film registration; colour photography. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION. Jan. 23, 1941, No. 921. Convention date, April 17, 1940. [Classes 97 (i) and 98 (ii)] In kinematograph apparatus, e.g. for printing photographically or by imbibition, as in threecolour work, wherein the films are registered upon teeth formed e.g. on a wheel, drum, or travelling belt, faulty registration due to wear of the teeth is reduced by guiding the films on to the teeth with one set of lateral edges of the register holes always engaging the corresponding sides of the teeth. Film-tensioning means may also in known manner be provided to cause the leading edges of the register holes always to engage the forward faces of the teeth. The invention is illustrated as applied to imbibition printing appratus, wherein dye-receptive and matrix films 6, 7, Fig. 2, are guided by rollers 8, 9 on to an endless travelling belt 1 having teeth which engage the sprocket holes of the films, and driven either by one or both of the drums over which it travels, or by the pull of the films on it. On engaging the belt, the films are firmly seated thereon by pressure rollers 10, 11 of which 10 turns in a stationary bearing, and 11 turns in a bearing 13 mounted on arms 14 pivoted at 15 to the fixed framework, and urged by a spring so as to press roller 11 against roller 10. In known manner, the belt teeth 2, Fig. 5, on one side are intended to fit the sprocket holes both crosswise and lengthwise of the film and those 3 as the other side to fit the holes lengthwise only. Fig. 5 shows a worn tooth which permits lateral play of the films, and to avoid this play, the film guide rollers 8 and 9 are each mounted so as to be laterally adjustable, whereby the left-hand sides of the sprocket holes are caused to engage always the left-hand sides of the teeth. For this purpose, the roller, which has film seating shoulders 26, Fig. 4, turns on ball bearings 25 on an internally threaded sleeve 23 which is flanged at 24 and rides as a nut on a threaded stud 18 secured to the fixed framework 21. Lateral adjustment of the roller is effected by loosening a lock-nut 22, rotating the flanged sleeve 23 by the desired amount, and then tightening the locknut. The above-mentioned film tensioning means may comprise rollers 35, 36, Fig. 2, mounted on weighted arms pivoted at 37, 38. The rollers 8-11 may be immersed in a water tank to avoid inclusion of bubbles between the films.
