Abstract
544,831. Metal-vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and KNIGHT, H. DE B. Feb. 4, 1941, No. 1446. [Class 39 (i)] In thermionic cathode controlled arc discharge devices, the control grid is associated with an auxiliary anode, and the main anode is screened from the cathode so that the discharge thereto occurs only when the auxiliary discharge is started. As shown, the anode 1 and cathode 2 are enclosed in a tubular screen 7, and a baffle 8, which may be such as is described in Specifications 413,125 and 444;362, is interposed between the anode and cathode. The biasing potential applied to the screen and baffle is such that the main discharge is prevented at all voltages within the range of the device, in the absence of the auxiliary discharge. The latter is supplied by an auxiliary anode 9 and a control grid 11 which is disposed opposite an aperture 10 in the screen 7 and on the cathode side of the baffle. The cathode is an enclosure 6 internally coated with strontium or barium oxide, heated by an element 5 and may be of the shielded type described in Specification 308,447, [Class 39 (i)]. In a modified form of the device, the cathode is a directly heated, filament, surrounded by an open-ended cylinder, and the baffle is an imperforate disc disposed over the open end of the cylinder and transversely across the main discharge path. The discharge takes place around the edge of the disc, and the auxiliary anode and grid are disposed adjacent the discharge path. Specification 445,593 also is referred to.
