Abstract
544,706. Ammunition projectiles. TURNER, G. F. B., and REDGRAVE, K. July 9, 1940. No. 11435. [Class 9 (i)] In a shell particularly for anti-aircraft and other small-calibre guns fitted with a fuze comprising a separate detonator fired by a spring-loaded pin as the gun is fired for flash ignition of a time-action train by which the main detonator is fired if the shell fails to impact its target, the firing-needle for the separate detonator and its components, and the explosive body fired thereby to flash the main detonator, are arranged symmetrically and in mass-balanced relationship about the longitudinal axis of the fuze. A centrifugally-actuated safetyshutter is fitted between the main detonator and the bursting-charge. As shown, the main (impact) firing-pin 30, which is carried in a sleeve 31, is normally held clear of the main detonator 3 by a segmented collar 29 held in its closed (operative) position by an encircling spring 40. A centrifugally-actuated shutter is held at safety between the main detonator 3 and charge 5, until the gun is fired, by an inertia detent-pin 8. The other firing pin 11 is inertiaactuated as the gun is fired to strike a detonator 13 the flash from which travels through a passage 15 to a time-fuze 16. The latter is arranged to fire an explosive pellet 23 the flash from which is led by a passage 26 to the space 27 above a plug 38 formed with flash-passages 28 leading to the detonator 3. A primer 40a supported on a diaphragm 41 is arranged to align with a primer 42 in the shutter 7 and a stem-primer 43 in the charge container 6. As shown, this is formed in two parts screwed together and fitted in the casing 1 to which the fuze body 2 is attached by a tapped plug 4.
