Abstract
544,417. Compression ignition fuels. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Oct. 8, 1940, No. 14997. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1939. [Class 91] Diesel fuel is stabilized by the addition of 0.2 per cent. to 3 per cent. of an organic compound containing a five membered heterocyclic ring structure containing both nitrogen and sulphur. Classes of compounds mentioned include thiazoles, thiadiazoles, thiazolines, benzothiazoles and mercaptobenzothiazoles. Compounds specified include thiazole, 2 : 3-thiadiazole, 3 : 5-thiadiazolt, 2:5-thiadiazole, 3:4-thiadiazole, 3:4:5-thiatriazale, 1:3-dithia-2-azole, thiazoline, 2-mercaptothiazoline, benzothiazole, o-thiazolidine, thiobiazolone, 2-imino-4-keto-thiazole and perthiocyanic acid. The above compounds may be substituted by the groups halogen, amino, mercapto, hydroxyl, alkyl, aryl, -NH-alkyl, -NH-aryl, -N-alkyl, -N-aryl, -S- alkyl, -S-aryl, and organic groups containing heterocyclic ring structures. The preferred subgroup of compounds is benzothiazole, and its substitution products. Compounds of this subgroup mentioned include 2-methyl-benzothiazole, 6-methyl-benzothiazole, 2-mercapto-6-amyl benzothiazole, 2-anilidobenzothiazole, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole 2-butyl-mercaptobenzothiazole, benzothiazolehydrazine, primuline base, and benzothiazyl disulphide. The compounds may be used alone or in conjunction with other ignition promoters such as nitrogen tetrasulphide. Examples of suitable fuel mixtures are given. Specification 544,492 is referred to.
