[Classes 69 (i) and 135] A compound Venturi tube or equivalent area and pressure-reducing device comprises a conduit consisting of an outer Venturi tube or containing an equivalent device such as an orifice plate, at least one Venturi tube located inside the conduit, and means for obtaining the differential pressure across an end of the conduit and the throat of the inner tube, the latter being supported in the conduit by means located at or near an end of the inner tube remote from the throat of the conduit. In Fig. 1, an inner Venturi tube 2 is housed within, and coincides in length with, the upstream side of an outer Venturi tube 1, and is supported by a spider 5 including a ring 6 engaging a recess in the outer tube. The inner tube 2 is formed of two parts threaded together, leaving a recess 9 communicating with apertures 10. Tappings 11, 12a transmit the differential pressure to means such as automatic valves operated by given differential pressures, metres or operating plant for a plunger or diaphragm pump. In another form, a further Venturi tube is similarly arranged within the upstream taper of the tube 2, the tappings being taken from the outer and innermost tubes. In Fig. 3, a main conduit 18, with an orifice plate 19, has a shunt conduit 20 containing inner and outer Venturi tubes 21, 22 ; in a further form, the orifice plate is replaced by another Venturi tube. The outer surfaces of the inner tubes may be uniformly tapered, and their ends may be knife edged ; the ratios of the areas of their ends to the surrounding co-planar areas of the next outer tubes are substantially equal.
