Abstract

543,996. Fuel &c. tanks. IOCO RUBBER & WATERPROOFING CO., Ltd., and RYAN, A. No. 20, 1940, No. 16706. [Class 69 (i)] A fuel tank or other container for liquids of the self-sealing type is provided with a number of flexible steel wire mesh or expanded metal screens in spaced relation within the tank to reduce the velocity of a bullet entering the tank and render ineffective the column of liquid surrounding the bullet. A tank 1, with a selfsealing cover 2 of rubber &c. contains a series of spirally wound screens 3 of steel wire mesh &c. the convolutions thereof being spaced apart and from the walls of the tank by spacers 4 welded &c. to the screens. The screens may be in short lengths separated by baffle plates of gauze, perforated sheet metal &c., and may be removable individually or as a unit on removing one end of the tank. In another form, the screens are bent into circular or other shape and placed one within another.
