Abstract

543,935. Switch contacts; electromagnetic switches. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. June 9, 1941, No. 7264. Convention date, June 15, 1940. [Class 38 (v)] A contact 6 of an electric switch is covered with a film of mercury 8 or other conducting liquid obtained by capillary attraction from a pool of mercury 9 into which a portion of the contact dips. The contact must be of a material " wet " by mercury and may be of iron, platinum, nickel or copper. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to the fixed contact 6 of an electromagnetic switch having pole pieces 13, 14 and an armature 2 carrying the movable contact 5. The armature consists of a thin concave strip with saw-cuts at the upper end to make it flexible there. Owing to repeated engagement of the contacts, a thin film of mercury becomes transferred to the movable contact 5 also. In a modification, Figs. 7, 11 (not shown), the movable contact has a portion dipping into the mercury and other portion which moves between two fixed contacts, thus forming a twoway switch. Fig. 16 shows another form of armature, adapted to pivot about the points 33, 34 and carrying a contact member, portions 37 and 39 of which alternately engage fixed confacts and portion 41 of which dips into the mercury pool. One of the fixed contacts may be a tube through which the container is evacuated.
