Abstract

543,894. Fluid-actuated valves. DODSON, E. Aug. 15, 1940, No. 13044. [Class 135] A safety cut-off valve for use on fluid transmission conduits part of which is duplicated and adapted to isolate a damaged section comprises a piston valve member normally held in its central position by springs and subject on its end faces to the pressures prevailing in the two conduits so that in the event of pressure falling in one conduit due to leakage the pressure in the other conduit moves the valve in the appropriate direction to isolate the damaged section. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the piston valve has dished ends 21, 21<SP>1</SP>, adapted to co-operate with seatings 27, 271 of synthetic rubber and is normally held in its central position by the balance of pressure and by springs 22, 221 arranged between shoulders 24 and ported spring guides 23, 231 engaging the dished ends of the valve. In the position shown fluid entering at 10 passes through ports 20, 18 in a liner and annular recess 17 in the valve member to passages 19 and thence to spaces 25, 251 surrounding the spring guides, and from these spaces passes through ports 26, 261 in the guides to outlets 12, 121. A similar device is fitted at the other end of the transmission system, the ports 12, 12<SP>1</SP> there serving as inlets while the port 10 acts as a discharge port. To maintain the valve in a floating condition passages 28 conduct high pressure lubricant from the passages 19 to annular grooves 29 surrounding the piston. Specification 482,935 is referred to.
