Abstract

543,726. Coating magnesium &c. HIGH DUTY ALLOYS, Ltd., and WHITBY, L. Nov. 15, 1940, No. 16536. [Class 41] Protective coatings are formed on magnesium and magnesium base alloys, following preliminary de-greasing, by electrolytic treatment with direct or with alternating current, the magnesium or alloy in the former instance being the anode at or above " spark potential" (about 60 volts) in alkaline solutions of high concentration, comprising for instance sodium carbonate, pyrophosphate, aluminate, or metasilicate and potassium fluoride, with or without a wetting-out agent such as turkey red oil or a sulphonated higher alcohol. The voltage may be raised to the spark point in stages. Carbon or mild steel cathodes are employed and the temperature of the bath is maintained at from 20 - 30‹ C. According to the voltage and the bath employed coatings capable of serving as bases for coating with paint, lacquer, rubber &c., or for receiving dyes, or hard resistant coatings may be obtained. The coatings may be impregnated with passivifying agents such as chromates. Specification 522,382 is referred to.
