Abstract
543,683. Permanent magnets. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 18, 1940, No. 15431. Convention date, Nov. 4, 1939. Drawings to Specification. [Class 35] A permanent magnet, suitable for the brake magnet of an induction-motor meter, is shielded against fluctuating magnetic fields by a coating of conductive material, such as copper, applied by electrodeposition, the coating being at least onethousandth of an inch thick, for example between seven and twenty-thousandths, and preferably averaging fifteen thousandths. The formed magnet is cleaned and dipped in sulphuric or hydrochloric acid before plating. If the latter operation is carried out for several hours at a temperature of 175‹ F, the magnet is aged at the same time. The pole tips may or may not be covered with a deposit, and in the latter case a layer of resistant material such as rubber, wax or asphalt, is placed over them during plating and subsequently removed. Silver also is referred to as plating material.
