Abstract

543,566. Amide polymerization products; dyeing regenerated cellulose and cellulose acetate ; artificial filaments. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I., HANFORD, W. E., and STEVENSON, H. B. May 8, 1940, No. 8268. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] N-vinyl tertiary amides or imides of aliphatic carboxylic acids are polymerized alone or in admixture with other polymerizable substances, preferably in the presence of catalysts such as iodine, boronfluoride, hydrogen peroxide and benzoyl and acetyl peroxides. In examples : (1) a polymer is obtained in granular form by heating N-vinylsuccinimide in water containing methylstarch and benzoyl peroxide; (2) N- vinyldiglycolylimide is polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide to give a polymer which can be spun to fibres; (3) N-vinyl-N- methylacetamide is polymerized with methyl methacrylate ; (4) N-vinylsuccinimide is polymerized with vinyl acetate in the presence of benzoyl peroxide and aqueous sodium starch glycolate as a dispersing agent ; (5) N-vinylsuccinimide is polymerized with methylmethacrylate using methylstarch as dispersing agent ; (6) N-vinylsuccinimide is similarly polymerized with methylacrylate and urea, with methacrylic acid, with vinyl acetate, with methacrylonitrile, with styrene and with chloroprene using carbon tetrachloride, toluene and dichlorethylene as solvents and sulphated oleylacetate as dispersing agent; (7) N-vinyl-α- pentenylsuccinimide is polymerized with methylmethacrylate. The following N-vinylamides and imides are also specified : N-vinylglutarimide, N-vinyl-α (and #) methylglutarimide, N-vinyldimethylsuccinimides, N-vinyltetramethyl succinimide, N-vinylphenylsuccinimide, N-vinylbutylsuccinimide, N-vinylthiodiglycolylimide, N-vinyl-N-tolylacetamide, N-vinyl-N- cyclohexylacetamide, N-vinyl-N-methylbutyramide, N-vinyl-N-methylpropionamide, N- vinyl-N-allylacetamide and N-vinyl-N-methylcapramide. Ethenoid compounds with which the latter may be polymerized include : vinylethers and ketones, α-methylene aliphatic carboxylic acids, esters, amides and nitriles and vinylaryl compounds. Polymers may be produced in granular form by effecting the polymerization in the presence of protective colloids such as scluble starch, partially neutralized polymethacrylic acid, polymethacrylamide, and partly saponified polyvinylacetate. Polymerization may also be effected in an emulsion, using as emulsifying agent sodium oleate, alkylnaphthalenesulphonate, triethanolamine stearate, cetylpyridinium bromide, sodium salts of sulphated coconut alcohols and sulphated vinylglycerides. 'Polymeric N-vinylsuccinimide yields by hydrolysis with acids, alkalis and ethanolamine, various products containing amino and carboxylic groups which modify the dyeing properties of regenerated cellulose and cellulose acetate. Polymeric N-vinylsuccinimide may be used as a water-sensitive putty and in chewing gum and its interpolymers are useful as stamp adhesives. Specification 539,332 is referred to.
