Abstract

543,180. Making bearings. ABLETT, C. A. May 11, 1940, No. 8510. [Class 83 (ii)] A split race for a ball- or roller-bearing is made by bending strip steel and then hardening instead of by forging, cutting from a tube &c. The race may be of low or high carbon or of carburised or alloy steel the ends of each strip may be inclined as at f or of " bird-mouth " form g to form two or three joints, over which the rollers a will pass gradually. After hardening, the race may be ground. The race is suitable for bearings as described in Specifications 312,830, 332,012, 334,044, [Group XXIV], and 451,882; [Group XXXIV], and may be used in gun, torpedo-tube, searchlight, and rangefinder mountings. The Provisional Specification states that the joints in the race may be welded. Specification 390,893, [Group XXXIV), also is referred to.
