[Class 31 (ii)] A machine for comparing perforation patterns in preselected portions of master and detail cards and having means for variably controlling the punching of additional perforations in selected records as the result of agreement or disagreement of the comparison comprises the combination of punch mechanism for transferring additional perforations from master cards to detail cards, a number of punch disabling means to prevent such transfer, means under control of the comparing mechanism to render one of the disabling means ineffective when an agreement is sensed and to render a second of the disabling means ineffective when a disagreement is sensed and additional means settable to render the punch disabling means ineffective selectively regardless of the action of the comparing mechanism. In one form comprising card perforation comparing mechanism and punching mechanism similar to that described in Specification 546,590 wherein a punch set pin box 495 is reciprocated vertically and as a result of the action of the comparing mechanism some of the set pins 500 become displaced these being locked by spring urged slides 502 which are retracted momentarily to wipe out the previous set up by means of cam 560, arm 553, link 552, lever 551 and arm 547 carrying rollers 546 bearing against a bail 541 contacting the rearward ends of the retraction slides 502 and the punching device being disabled by means holding the lever 551 in its upwardly displaced position; the lever 551 has pivoted thereto two latches 810, 812 connected by a spring 815 and provided respectively with shoulders 811, 813 adapted to engage a fixed projection 816 for holding the arm 551 elevated, either latch being positioned to maintain its shoulder out of engagement with the projection 816 by a pin 825 on a double spring-jointed bar 820, 821 operated by means of the punch control cam 770 of the Specification above referred to through bell-crank 772 and lever 774 set in operative position by lug 777 and operation control dial 700. The latches are also engageable by a pin 805 on a rod 801 actuated by a control lever 800 adapted to be set in one of three positions. In the middle position shown in full lines the pin 805 holds both latches 810, 812 outof engagement with the fixed projection 816 for both positions of the bar 820 so that punching takes place on agreement with cam 770 in the position shown and also on disagreement with cam 770 rotated by the comparing mechanism through 45 degrees. In the upper.dotted position of the control lever 800, the disabling latch 812 only is held ineffective by the pin 805 so that punching takes place on agreement with cam 770 in the position shown and the punching mechanism is disabled by latch 810, when on disagreement a high part of cam 770 moves bar 820 and pin 825 to the right allowing shoulder 811 to engage projection 816 and hold up the disabling lever 551. In similar manner with the control lever 800 in the lower dotted position the latch 810 only is held ineffective so that the punching mechanism is disabled on agreement and punching takes place on disagreement.
