Y This invention relates to printing machines of the kind through which printing devices'are sequentially fed to have impressions made therefrom onto sheets successively passed through the machine.
While a wide variety of: printing devices are sequentially fed through printing machines of the character to which this invention pertains, that shown. in Gallwitzer Patent No. 2,049,436, patented August 4, 1936, is exemplary. As is well understood in the art, printing devices of th'isgeneral In other printing machines of this general character as, for example, those employed to adparticular printing device, means were incorporated in the machine for interrupting operation devices through the machine solong as the machine remained in operation.
However, there are instances where it is desirable to make a large number of impressions from of both the means operative to feed the printing No. 1,952,914, patented March 27, 1934.
There have been other arrangements to which resort hasbeen had to. control operationiof the chine so that the advancing means will need not be kept normally operative. In such instances. however, usually a different number of sheets or the like may be 'fed through the machine to receive oneor more impressions from the different Inan instance Where a collection of sheets or the like are fed through a printing machine and each sheet.
' the event no sheet or each is to receive impressions from the same printing device, it is often necessary to make a plurality of impressions from such a printing device on each sheet fed through the machine, and yet another object of this invention is to enable this to be accomplished when the need so to do arises, and an object ancillary to the foregoing is to employ means effective to position each sheet fed into a printing" machine relative to a printing device disposed at printing position therein and to so arrange such means that a plurality of different positions "on each sheet may be artration, show a. preferred embodiment and the principle thereof and what I now consider to be the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle. Other embodiments of the invention embodying the same or equivalent principlemay be used and structural changes may be made as desired the purview of the appended claims.
In the drawings,
the general character with which my invention ranged relative to printing position whereby a j plurality of spaced impressions may Other and more specific objects are tomaintain a driving member in a means for feeding printing and like devices through a printing machine out of driving connection with a driven means included with such sired to impart advancing movement to the printing and like devices ,to' be fed through the machines; to control interconnection between the driving and driven means in a means for feeding printing and like devices through a printing ma-,
' chine under characteristics selectively included like passed-through the ma.-
eifective toprevent driving driving and a driven memin sheets or the chineytolatch means connection'between a her in ameans for feeding printing and like demachine in such a posi-,
vices through a printing tion that driving connection between the driven and driving members will normally be prevented; to unlatch means of the aforesaid character under control of a detecting means included in the machine responsive, for example, to characteristics selectively included in sheets or the like successively fed through j the machine; to insure against undesired successive feeding of printing and like devices by restoring to effective position, in each feeding operation of a printing device feeding means, means' effective to prevent a feeding operation-oftheprintingior like device feeding means; to electrically control means operative to maintain a driving member of a printing'or like device feeding means disconnected from a driven member in such means; and to enablem'eanseflfective to prevent successive feeding of printingor like devices to-be readily rendered ineffective when so desired.
In those instances where the advance of printing or like devices through a printing machine is under control of detecting means responsive to be made on feeding means until it is desheets, or characteristics included in sheets,
a sheet to feed or after an operationof normally inoperative printing or like device advancing means; Other and and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings which,

A conductor 32, Figs. 9 and 3, leads from the spring contact I25 to one end of the winding of the solenoid 51 and a conductor I33 leads from the other end of this winding to a suitable source of electric current (notshown) av conductor I34 leading from this source of current to the-contact. i233. Whenever the detecting wheel I alttains its aforesaid lower position, theadjusting screw I2 1 forces the contact point I26 intoengagement with the contact point I21 and. thereupon circuit; is closed to the winding of the solenoid 91 and as an incident to the resulting energization of the solenoid 91, the core 98 thereof is attracted, against the effectof the spring I04, from the upper position shown in lower position shown in Fig. '1. Thereupon the shoulder 89 is withdrawn from engagement with the lug 89 and the rocker 85 is freed to the efiect of the spring 94 to thereby be disposed in the position shown in Fig. '1 wherein the finger 88 is held out of the path of the driving member or pawl I8.
Such energization of the solenoid 91 and re traction of the f nger 08 from the position in which it may engage the pawl 18 is timed to occur during the time the pawl 13 is moving from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3 into the retracted position thereof shown in Figs. 6 and '1. It will be understood that if a normal sheet S is disposed beneath the wheel drop IZI moves in position below the roller IIS, then the solenoid 51 is not energized with the result thatthe finger 88 engages the pawl 18 and maintains it in the position shown in Fig. 6 to prevent driving movement being imparted to the sprockets 49 and the chains 50. When, however,
by reason of the presence of a sheet SP therebe- I09 moves into its aforesaid lower position and circuit is closed to the solenoid 91 and, as explained above, the finger 83 is held from contact with the pawl 18, then at the end of its retracting movement the pawl 18 attains the position shown inFig. '1 so that in the course ofthe return of the arm 11 oftherocker 13 to itsnormal at rest position shown in Fig. 3, the driving member or pawl 13 is effective'on the driven member, including the adjacent pin 82 and the sprocket 49, to thereby impart an advancing movement to the chains 50. Thereupon the pawls as on these chains are effective to withdraw the printing device D that has been disposed in printing position from this position and to advance it to the dischargechute C whereby this printing device will pass into the galley G, and the pawls 5I are also efiective to advance the succeeding or a new printing device into printing position above the anvil A beneath the platen P.
. Thus, at least eachtime a card as SP having an opening therein as I08 moves into position beneath the detecting wheel I09, circuit is closed to the solenoid 91 and the rocker I85 is freed to the action of the spring '94 so that the finger 83. moves into a position, such as that shown in Fig.' '1, wherein the driving member as the pawl 18 so that this driving member is permitted to engage a driven member as a pin 82 and thereby bring about an advancing movement of the printing or like devices. It will thereforebe seen that, under control of the sheets or, as in the present instance, characteristics included in selected of the sheets that are fed through a printing machine, an adlow, the detecting wheel I09 at the time the above the, anvil A r it is prevented from engaging Fig. 3 into the I parted to the printing devices-may vancing movement is imparted to the printing devices or, in other words, the advancing of the printing devices is under control of the sheets;v
As will be explained ingreater detail hereinafter, there may be instanceswhere two -spe-; cial sheets as SP including. characteristics under control of Whichan advancing movement ispimpass through the'machine successively, and itwill be recognized that in such an instance .an advancing movement; should be imparted to the :printing or like devices .in successive voperations of the machine. :In other sheets will be interposed between successive sheets as SP, andin such instances a sheet thatv is adapted toreceive impressions from the printing device that has moved into printing position will follow a special'sheet as S1? whichbrings about the advancing of a printing device into printing position. Furthermore, usually a number of sheets will be i as SP andall of the sheets interposed between special sheets as SP, that clude the characteristic which bring about advancirig of the printing devices are to receive impressions from the sameprinting device.
Hence, it is desirable that the means, in the present instance the finger 88,, which controls the interconnection between a drivingand a driven member in a means for advancingprinting devices through a printing machine, be restored to position once it has been retracted from such position in order that driving connection between the driving and driven means, as aforesaid, will be established only when desired. Furpreventundesired advanc is, sheets which ininsure that the means which are operative to maintain a driving means disconnectedfrom a driven means be the position in which this will be effected as .an
incident to each complete cycle of operation of the'rnachine. I
In the present instance this is accomplished by insuring thatthe rocker 85, finger 38, is restored to or maintained in the position. shown in Figs. 3 and 6, in which it is effective to prevent driving connection between the driving and driven means, as an'incident to the completion ofa cycle of operation of the machine, and accomplished will now be described.
A cam shaft I35, journaled in bearings as I38 suitably supported from the frame'of themachine, is provided and functions to control certain operations of themachine, as, will be ex plained presently, this cam shaft being-driven from the main drive shaft 53 in a manner also Furthermore," since the explained presently.
chine that is to shaft I35 makes one revolution to three of the drive shaft 52 from which, as explainedhere-q inabove, the platten arm 53 and the. driving rocker 13 of the printing device advancing means are operated. Thus, thecam shaft I35 makes one complete revolution for each'sheet that. is'
passed through the machine and may therefore advantageously be employedato insure, in the present instance, restoration of the rocker to its latched position.
To this. end a cam onthe drive shaft I35 and is engaged with a cam followerroller I38 rotatably mounted on instances, of course, other terposed between special sheets maintained or restored to and therefore the the arrangement by whichthis is I31, Figs. 3 and an fast the .bell
