his-invention relates to printing machines of the kind used for printing bill's, statements, no-
tices, and the like which have a permanent form printed thereon in the machine or prior to in-' troducticn of the sheets into the machine. These machines are used to pr-int variable data in the nature of addresses or the like on the sheets. Additional variable data are often printed on the sheets this has been done in another printing machine. For example, in printingbills, the addresses are printed in one machine while the numerical data, such as the prices and extensionsthereof, are printed in another machine as, for example, in a computing printing machine. Further, when noti es are printed it is often desirable to not only print the permanent form and the address but also to print additional in- 7 formation as, for example, the name and addressof an agent or the like. The additional data ar related to the addresses and might be provided" on the device used for the printing of the addresses were it not for the fact that this additional data vary on successive uses of the printing devices as different sets-of'sheets are printed;
The salient object of my invention is to provide a machine-wherein variabledata, such as addresses or the like, may be printed on sheets passing therethrough and wherein additional Variable data related to the first variabledata may likewise be printed on the sheets.
Another object is toproviclea machine wherein related but independent variable data may be printed on sheets during devices.
Furth r objects of the invention. are to provide wherein a corresponding number of repetitious printing impressions may be made from the separate rinting devices; wherein the thereon at predetermined places; and which. will be simple and 've in operation and economical in manufacture.

If, for example, the sheet being printed is a public utility bill, including a main body and one or more stubs, the stop fingers will be spaced so that the sheet will be stopped in positions wherein the platen P will make an impression from the printing device D on each of the stubs and on the main body. The sheets S stored in the rack T have a permanent form printed thereon prior to storage in the rack but the sheets may be severed from a web and the permanent form may be printed thereon in a machine like that disclosed, for example, in the application of Emmett C. Hartley, Serial No. 404,123, filed November 1, 1929, now Patent No. 1,955,806, patented April 24, 1934, as my invention may be used with a machine of this kind.
A machine constructed in accordance with either of the referred to applications so prints a sheet that it will have an address thereonas well as a permanent form but the printing of any other matter on the sheethas been performed in a separate machine. Impressions are made from the printing devices D on the main body and each of the stubs, and it is desirable that any,
additional data printed on the sheets be likewise printed on the main body and each of the stubs. In the present machine, after an impression has been made from the printing device D on the last section of the sheet the printing device feeding means is rendered operative and a new printing device D is moved into position below the platen P and consequently impressions will be made therefrom onto the succeeding sheet moving with the traveling belt conveyor, and these printing operations will be performed in the manner just described.
The printing device feed used herein may be one like that disclosed in the application of Walter T. Gollwitzen serial No. 497,438, filed November 22, 1930. As described in that appli--' cation the printing device feed mechanism is operated from the platen operating shaft and in the present instance an eccentric 155 is fast on the shaft 22 and is surrounded by a band I83 embodying a portion I81 to which one end of a plunger I88 is secured. Fast on the plunger I38 is a collar I89. The plunger I98 extends through a sleeve I90 having a bearing ,i9I thereon pivotally connected at I92 to an arm I93 unitary with the drive rocker 95 that is pivotally mounted on shaft 93. A latch I99 is pivotally mounted at I95 on the sleeve I90 and includes a shoulder I96 that is normally urged into engagement with a surface on the collar i89 by a spring I91 acting on the latch I94. On the latch $94 is a pin I98 engageable with a cam surface I99 on the arm I19 of the rocker I pivotally mounted at I8I. On the other arm i82 of the rocker I80 is a roller I83 engageable with a cam I84 fast on the cam shaft 25. As the shaft 22 rotates, the eccentric I85 is rotated and a reciprocatory movement is imparted to the plunger I88. So

the sleeve I and the plunger are latched together and the sleeve reciprocates with the plunger I88 and the reciprocatory movement im parted to the sleeve I 90 is transmitted to the arm I93. The arm I93 is unitary with the drive rocker 95. A pawl I10 is pivotally mounted at the free. end of the drive rocker 95 and includes a recessed nose portion I1I engageable with the pins I12 on the sprocket I13 about which a printing device feed chain is directed, the sprocket I13 being fast on a shaft 14 which carries a similar sprocket about which another feed chain is directed. Pawls are provided on the feed chains which engage the printing devices D to move these printing devices through the printing device guideway. As the rocker 95 rocks about the shaft, the recessed nose portion I12 successively engages the pins I12 and imparts a stepby-step movement to the sprocket I13 and shaft I14 and consequently a step-by-step movement is imparted to the printing device feed chains and therefore the printing devices are moved through the machine in a step-by-step manner.
However, unless a one-section sheet is being printed it is desirable to hold a printing device in printing position until as many impressions are made therefrom as there are sections on the sheet being printed. The ratio of operation between the platen shaft 22 and the cam shaft 25 is equal to the number of sections on the sheets being printed. The cam I84 is provided with a dwell which engages the roller I83 and acts to hold the cam surface I99 in a position such that the pin I98 is engaged and the shoulder I96 is disengaged from the collar I89 and consequently even though the plunger I88 repeatedly reciprocates, the sleeve I90 and hence the drive are not reciprocated and the printing devices are not advanced. 7 However, when a formed portion on the cam engages the roller I83 the cam surface I99 is so positioned that it disengages the pin I98 and therefore the shoulder I96 moves into latching engagement with the collar I89 and the sleeve I90 is latched to the plunger I98 and movement is imparted to the printing device feed mechanisms to advance the printing devices. It is therefore apparent that a printing device D is held in printing position until an impression has been made therefrom by the platen P on each section of a sheet being printed.
An object of my invention is to print on the sheets variable data related to the data printed thereon from the printing devices D. To attain this I provide another printing couple in the machine which will operate on the sheets after an impression has been made on the last section thereof by the platen P. The additional data are to be printed on each section of the bill and to permit this I provide sheet stopping means similar to that previously described, and this means includes bearings 28 fast on the shaft 21 and including stop fingers 29 and tail portions 39 carrying rollers engaged with the cams 29 fast on the cam shaft 25.
The additional printing couple is mounted on the frame It and includes the bracket 32 on which-a platen arm 34. and an inker arm 35 are pivotally mounted. These arms cooperate to provide what is substantially a jaw. At the free end of the arm 34 is the platen P. A frame, generally indicated by 36, is mounted at the free end of the arm 35. On the frame 33 are side plates 31 and 33 having shoulders at the upper ends thereof engaging the peripheries of the bearings 39 and 49 fast on the shaft ll. Associated with the bearings 39 and 48 are wheels 42 and 43 which travel on the trackways 44 and 45 in the frame 36. Outwardly of the wheel 43 on the bearing 40 is a gear 46 meshed with a rack 41 carried by the frame 36. When the wheels 42 and 43 are moved along the trackways aooaers- Hand 45 the gear 46 rolls on therack 41 and causes rotation of the shaft 4i and the ink transferring roller 48, rotatable about but frictionally engaged with the shaft 4i intermediate the wheels 42 and 43. Between the wheel 42 and the roller 48 is an arm 59 and between the roller 3 and the wheel 43 is an arm 5!], both these arms being carried by the shaft 4i. .At the upper end of the arms 49 and 53 is a shaft 5| carrying an ink applying roller 52. Depending from the table top if is a bracket 54 having'an ink pad thereon against which the roller 4| may bear to pick up ink therefrom and the ink thus picked up is carried by'the roller -l8 to the roller 52 which applies it to the printing form.
Since the platen P is to operate in timed relation with the stop fingers 29', I provide means for operating this platen from the platen shaft and this means includes a beam 56, one end of which is slidably mounted in the upperend of the bracket 32 and at theopposite end thereof there is a yoke 5'! through which the platen shaft 22 is extended. A spring 58 extends between the yoke 51 and the frame 96 and urges the beam 56 toward the platen shaft. 0n the yoke is a roller engageable by a cam 66 fast on the platen shaft and when the cam engages the roller, the yoke and beam are moved against the action of the spring 58. To perform a printing operation,
the jaw comprising the arms 34 and 35 is closed to move the platen P and the ink applying roller 52 toward each other. This operation is performed from the beam 5E and is brought about by the following means: Extending between the beam and the arm 34 is a link El and a link 62 extends between the arm 35 and the beam. When the link all is in normal position, illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, it extends at an angle to the vertical. When the beam 56 is moved in a direction away from the platen shaft, the link 5i is moved into vertical position and therefore the distance between the arm 34 and the beam 56 is increased and consequently the arm 34 is pivoted downwardly fromthe dotted line position of Fig. 3 into the full line position thereof. The link 82 is at an angle to the vertical when in normal position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and when the beam 53 is moved as above described, the angularity thereof is increased, thus decreasing the distance between the arm 35 and the beam 55 which causes the arm 35 to be pivoted upwardly from the dotted line position of Fig. 3 into the full line position thereof. When the cam Gil disengages the rollerSH, the spring 58 moves the beam 56 in the opposite direction and the arms 34 and 35 are moved back into the dotted line position of Fig. 3. The foregoing-movements of the arms 35 and 35 move the inking roller into engagement with the printing form and also cause operation of the platen.
The roller 43 transfers ink from the pad 55 to the roller 52, and this is brought about by moving the parts carried by the shaft 4! relative'to the frame Extending horizontally from the arms t9 and 56 are fingers 53 and 64 to which one end of the arm 65 is joined, the opposite end of this arm'being pivotally connected at E56 to the lower end of a rocker t pivotally mounted at-68 on the bracket 69 carried by the frame 56. On the link '61 is a roller 16 engageable with a cam H fast on the shaft 22 and disposed opposite to the cam.

will be engaged by the rise thereon at the same time at which the rise on the cam 60 engages the roller 59 to move the beam 56. Therefore, as the arm 35 ismoved upwardly, the arm 55 will be moved horizontally to similarly move the parts carried by the shaft 4!. Due to the intermeshing of the gear 46 with the rack 41 the shaft 4! will be rotated during this movement and the 'ink picked up from the pad 55 will be transformed.
A stencil printing form is employed herein andv form is inked and the printing operation is perthese stencils are mounted over openings in a web W and are successively moved in a step-bystep manner into printing position and while the stencils are shown as being arranged over openings in a web it is within the purview of my-invention to employ a web of stencil paper and to form the printing characters thereon and to do this entails the use of stencil paper of sufficient strength to resist the stresses attendant to the operation of the device. The printing characters on the web W are related to the printing characters on the printing devices D and when a public utility bill is being printed the printing characters on the web will be the prices and extensions for the bill addressed from one of the printing devices D. It is therefore necessary that the sequence of the printing devices D and the sequence of the printing characters on the web W be sim- Her. To insure this similarity, impressions are made on the web W from the printing devices D. The impressions on. the web will correspond to the sequence of the printing devices, and it is not necessary that the entire impression be made on the web from the printing devices for it will be sumcient if only the name or the address is printed, as an example. The impressions on the web will be made adjacent each of the windows therein and the operator may therefore easily determine, by verifying if the name on the web corresponds to the name on the sheet, whether or not impressions are being made from printing characters on the web which relate to the printing devices D from which impressions were previously made on the sheet. In the illustrated machine all of the impressions are made on the sheet from the printing device D before passage of the sheet to the printing couple employing the web W. While the sequence of the rinting charactors on the web corresponds to the sequence of W on a sheet which has been previously printed from the printing device D.
In Fig. 10, a typical sheet is illustrated and the impressions X on this sheet are made from the printing devices D while the impressions X are made from the w-ebW. Since all of the impressions X are made before any of the impressions X are made and as an independent set of stop fingers are employed to position the sheet to receive the impressions it is possible to locate these impressions at the proper places on the stubs and main body portion of the sheet. The Web W is held in position untilthe required number of impressions have been made therefrom, and further the mechanism is arranged to impart a step-by-step movement to the web. To attain this I arrange the web in a roll A, referred to hereinafter as the supply roll, and this roll is mounted on a spindle B at the front of the machine. From the supply roll A the web is directed over suitable guides to pass between the roller 52 and the platen P, an opening being provided in the table top intermediate the platen and the roller, and the web passes above this opening to a roller 13 mounted at the upper end of the bracket 14. The web W, platen P and roller 52 and allied mechanisms are spaced from the platen P and cooperating mechanisms so that the first impression will not be made on a sheet from the web W until after the last impression has been made thereon fr m the printing device D. The stop fingers for positioning the sheet relative to the printing device D may be so located that the impressions may be made in any desired location on each of the stubs and on the main body portion, and the stop fingers for locating the sheet relative to the web W must also be located as required. Thus, when different style sheets are being printed impressions may be made thereon in accordance with the characteristics thereof, for the only change that need be made in the machine is the re-iocating of the stop fingers and the operating cams therefor, and these parts are so mounted that they may be easily adjusted.
It has been stated that the sheets comprise a main body portion and one or more stubs and that impressions are made not only on the main body portion but also on each of the stubs. Consequently, it is necessary that each particular set of printing characters on the web W be retained in printin position until the required number of operations have been made therefrom. Thus, a step-by-step movement is imparted to the web W to unwind it from the supply roll A and to wind it on the takeup roll F that is mounted on the spindle E. The spindle E has a pulley i8 thereon and a pulley is provided on the platen shaft 22. A belt '19 is directed about the pulleys l8 and 89 and serves to turn the takeup roll F to wind the web thereon.
The web is advanced so as to bring the windows into printing position and this is accomplish d by providin spaced perforations in the web intermediate the windows. Pins it are provided at spaced intervals on he periphery of the roller 73 and these pins are spaced correspondingly to the spacing of the perforations 15 in the web W, so that the pins enter the perforations when the web is directed about this roller. From the roller 13 the web is directed abouta guiding roller H from whence it extends to the takeup roll F. In order to advance the web with a step-bystep movement, the following mechanisms are provided: In the bracket '55 there is a shaft 8! having a disc 82 rotatably mounted thereon and a disc 83 fast thereon adjacent the disc 82. A gear 84 is also fast on this shaft. The gear-.84 meshes with a pinion 85 fast on the shaft 85 which carries the roller 13. Pivotally mounted on the shaft 8| is an arm 35 and pivotally connected to the medial portion thereof is a link'll, the free end of which is pivotally connected at 88 to the arm 65. Therefore, as the arm 65 is reciprocated in the manner described, the arm 86 is moved between the full and dotted line positions thereof illustrated in Fig. 3. Pivotally' mounted at the free end of the arm 85 is a pawl 89 (Fig. '7) 'acted on by a spring 90 to be urged into engagement with the periphery of the disc 82. Notches 9| (Fig. 8) are provided at equally spaced intervals in the periphery of the disc 82 and as many notches are provided as there are sections on the sheet to be printed. Consequently, when the arm 65 is reciprocated to bring about the printing operations, as previously described, the arm 86 and pawl 89 will be reciprocated and the amount of reciprocation imparted to the pawl will be slightly more than the spacing between the notches SI. As the arm 55 moves to the left in Fig. 3, the pawl 89 will be seated in one of the notches 9| and in the present instance where there are four such notches the pawl will move the disc 82 through a ninety degree angle. When the arm 65 moves to the right, as viewed in Fig. 3, the pawl 89 will disengage one of the notches 9| and will move rearwardly to seat in the succeeding notch. This movement will be carried out as each printing operation is performed but no movement will be imparted to the web W until the last section of the sheet is being printed which in the present instance will be the fourth section. The fourth notch 9| is deeper than the other notches 9|, the bottom of these other notches 9i being arranged slightly outwardly of the periphery of the disc 83. In the disc 83 notches 92 are provided and the notch 9 l is deep enough to align the bottom thereof with the bottom of the notches 92. Thus, during three operations of the pawl 89 it will seat in the notches iii and no movement will be imparted to the disc 83. However, when the pawl 89 seats in the notch 95 it will also be seated in one of the notches 92 and therefore when the pawl 89 drives the disc 82 it will also drive the disc 83 and since the disc 83 is fast on the shaft 8!, this shaft will also be turned. The ratio between the gears 84 and 85 is such that when the shaft 8 i is turned, the roller 73 will be turned in an amount sufficient to move the web W so that one of the windows therein will be moved from alignment with the platen P and the succeeding window will be moved into alignment therewith. In this manner a step-bystep movement is imparted to the web W and it is apparent that to vary the amount of movement imparted to the web it will only be necessary to change the ratio between the gears 84 and 85. To cause movement of the web at the proper time in the cycle of operation it is only necessary to provide discs such as the discs 82 and 83 with notches therein corresponding to the number of sections on the bill and by making these changes the device may be readily arranged to operate on any bill or sheet.
The operation of the device thus far described is as follows: Sheets having a permanent form printed thereon are introduced into the rack T and the machine is set in operation. The sheets are then successively withdrawn from the rack and passed to the conveyor belts 2| which carry the sheets along until the first of the stop fingers 29 is engaged by the leading edge of the first sheet whereupon the movement of the sheet is interrupted and at this time the platen P will operate to make an impression on the first section of the sheet from the printing device D which will have been previously moved into printing position over the anvil by the printing device feed mechanism 3!. Immediately following this printing operation the first of the stop fingers 29 will be withdrawn from stopping position and the sheet will again move with the conveyor belts and the second of the stopfingers will move into stopping positicn and the platen P will again beeperated. The sheet will be stopped in this manner as often as. there are sections thereon and after the last section has been printedthe sheet will move forwardly until the leading edge thereof engages the first of the stop fingers-'23 and at this time next sheet will move into engagement with the first of the stop fingers 2s. The platen P will make an impression from the next printing device D on the first section of this next sheet and the platen P will make impression from the printing characters on the web W on the first section of the first sheet. Both sheets will then be released from the engaged of the stop fingers and will move into engagement with the succeeding of the stop fingers andthis operation will be continued until the last section of each sheet has been printed whereupon the first sheet will be ischarged fromthe machine and the second sheet will be moved into position to be operated on by the platen P. A third sheet will move into position to be operatedon by the platen P and the printing device D will be changed at this time. Prior to the time the first impression is made on the previouslyreferred to second sheet, the web W will be advancedwhereby impressions may be made from the printing characters immediately behind those used in the printing operation on the first sheet. The foregoing operation is continued until as many sheets as desired have been printed.
In the embodiment of the invention thus far described, printing form for the additional variable data was changed each time a new sheet moved into printing relation with the platen P and it has been shown that such an arrangement is particularly advantageous in printing prices and extensions thereof on bills. However, under certain conditions it may not be desirable to change the printing form for the additional data as each. new sheet moves into printing position with the platen P. An example of this is in the printing of notices, such as are issued by insurance companies, whereupon the name and address of the agent is often printed as well as the name and address of the policy holder. The printing devices D are employed to print the names and addresses of the policy holders but the agents names are printed from other similar printing devices D in a printing couple located similarly to that including the web W. When this is done the printing devices D having the names and addresses of policy holders havingthe same agent are grouped and an identifying mcans'is provided on the first printing device of a particular group. This identifying means may consist of a tab on the printing device or otheranalogous identifying means. When a printing device having such a tab moves into printing position means act on the tab to determine Whether or not the printing device D is to be changed. A mechanism for accomplishing this is disclosed-in Figs. 11 to 15, inclusive, and by referring thereto it may be seen that a magazine M is provided into which the printing devices D may be introduced.
The printing devicesD are of the usual kind and if desired may be similar to the printing devices D. These printing devices are withdrawn from the magazine M and passed through a printing device guideway til to printin PQsition below a platen P carried by the arm :91! pivotally mounted at 92 on the frame l6. On an extension of the platen shaft 22- is a cam .93
which engages a roller 94 on the arm 9| to urge the platen P" into printin'g position, said platen being moved from printing position by a spring (not shown) or other suitable means. The printing devices are withdrawn from the magazine M" by a pair of pawls 95fpivotally supported on a slide block 96', mounted in the frame i6, and actuated in a manner described to withdraw the printing device from the magazine M and pass them into printing position-below the'platen P". In the application of Walter T. Gollwitzer, Serial No. 497,433, filed November 22, 1930,1a printing device feed mechanism of the character employed herein is illustrated.
Heretofore, a printing device feed mechanism of this kind has been'briefiy described and asset forth, this printing device feed mechanism in.- cludes a drive rocker indicated'by 95 The rocker 95 is mounted on a shaft 96 and on the bearing portion thereof is a boss 91 engagedby the nose 93 on therocker es pivotally mountedat I50. At the free, end of therocker 99 is a bell crank l0l including an arm M2 to which a vertically extending rod 583 is pivotally connected. This link H3 is connected to a bar H3 and when thelink'is moved as just described the bar is withdrawn from position below the arm @501? the bell crank I it pivotally'mounted at' H1. The arm H5 includes a shield H8 and whensaid arm is rested on the hai H53 the pawl H8 is held in an upper position above the plane of the upper edge of the slide bar 820. However, when the bar i l 3, is withdrawn frombe low the arm 1 t5 the shield H8 :is moved from engagement with the nose of the pawl H9 at a predetermined time in the cycle of operation of the machine. This time is governed by a cam 12-1 on the cam shaft 21. This camhas a notch I22 therein into which the nose 123 on the arm 124 may move when the bar H3 is withdrawn from position below the arm l lathe notch I22 moving into registration with the nose I23 at a predetermined time in the cycle of operation of the machine. The slide bar we is connected to the slide block 86. When this car is moved the printing devices Dwill be withdrawn from the magazine M, and this bar is operated when the nose J23 moves into the notch I22 for at this..time the nose of the pawl I I9 may move into the notch I24 in the slide bar I253. As soon as the pawl H9 is retracted from the notch L24, the spring 12% extending between the spring anchors on the frame and the slide bar I20 moves the slide bar back into its normal position. The pawl H9 is carried at the lower end of a rocker I25 (Fig. 12) pivotally mounted at 52% on a portion of the frame I5. This rocker I25 carries a roller I2! that engages a cam I28 fast on the shaft 22. Upon each revolution of the shaft 22 the cam I23 acts on the roller I21 to move the rocker 25 from the full line position of Fig. 12 into the dotted line position thereof, and when the pawl I I9 is seated in the notch I24 the slide bar I20 will move therewith to thereby withdraw a printing device D from the magazine M. As soon as the printing device D having the tab I05 thereon moves from position above the rod I03, the spring I It will act to urge the rod I03 upwardly and should there be no tab M5 in the path of the rod I03 said rod will move upwardly and the bell'crank I0! will return to normal position. The spring IEO will also act on the lever I08 to urge the bar H3 into position below the arm I I5 whereby the shield I58 will be positioned below the nose of the pawl H9 to move it from and hold it out of the notch I134. The rocker 89 may be moved under these conditions but, by reason of the pivotal connection between the arm I06 and the link I07, no movement will be imparted to the lever I 2'38 until the rod 53 again engages a tab similar to the tab I05. Therefore, a printing device D will not be withdrawn from the magazine M unless the printing device D in printing position has a'tab thereon.
The sheet S will be stopped by fingers similar to the fingers 29 to position it relative to the platen P" sothat impressions may be made on the sheet at proper places as has been previously described. When a printing device D is withdrawn from the magazine M. by the pawls the printing deviceengaged by the pawls will engage the printing device which has been disposed below the platen P and will move this printing device forwardly into alignment with the opening above the chute I29 and this printing device will fall through the chute into a suitable printing device receiving galley wherein the printing devices D will be collected in the same sequence as that in which they were arranged when introduced into the magazine M'. If desired, the lower end portion I30 of the chute I29 may be arranged to be vertically extending whereby the printing devices will be collected therein in a vertical stack and when this is done a suitable retaining means will be provided to prevent the printing devices from falling from the end portion I30,
It is manifest that the device disclosed in Figs. 11 to 15, inclusive, will function to change a printing device D only when the printing device D in printing position has a tab thereon and consequently if the printing devices D are arranged in a group all of the sheets printed from the printing devices D in a given group will receive impressions from the same printing device D. Moreover, if each of the printing devices D is provided with a tab, this arrangement may be employed to successively change the printing 'devices D and therefore an arangement of this character may be used in the same manner as that employing the web W. Moreover, by providing a tail I3I on the pawl 09 and arranging this tail to cooperate with a bar similar to the bar H3, the advancing of the web W may be controlled from tabs on the printing devices D and such an arrangement is within the ambit of my invention.
I have described two embodiments of the invention, one employing a continuous Web'and a stencil printing form and the other embodying individual printing devices. These individual printing devices may be of the type employing embossed printing characters or these printing devices maybe of the stencil type. When printing devices using embossed characters are employed, a suitable inking means, such as an ink ribbon, will be passed thereover and when stencil printing forms are employed an inking device will be provided to supply ink thereto, and either of these arrangements is within the purview of my invention. Furthermore, I have provided an arrangement wherein the printing devices employed in the auxiliary printing operation may be changed in synchronism with the printing devices used to change the first information or the printing devices for this auxiliary information may be retained in position until a number of printing impressions have been made therefrom, and I have described how the changing of the printing devices used to print the auxiliary in formation may be regulated from the printing devices printing the main or first information. Furthermore, I have described two uses of the invention, namely, in the printing of utility bills and in the printing of insurance notices but it is to be understood that these uses of the machine are merely illustrative and the machine is capable of being used for a number of other purposes which will be apparent to. one skilled in the'art.
While I have illustrated selected embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that these are capable of variation and modification and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and alterations as fall within the spirit and scope of the following claims:
I claim:
i. In a printing machine, continuously operat ing means for moving a sheet through the machine, a printing means for making an impression on the sheet and including a series of changeable printing devices sequentially movable therethrough, means for interrupting movement of the sheet during the operation of the printing means, a second printing means spaced from the first printing means and operable to make an impression on the sheet after the sheet has moved from association with the first printing means, the second printing means including a series of changeable printing. devices sequentially movable therethrough, means for interrupting movement of the sheet during operation of the second printing means, and means for operating the sheet movement interrupting means in timed-relation with each other.
2. In a printing machine, continuously operating means for moving a sectional sheet through the machine, a printing means for making separate impressions on the sections of said sheet and including a series of changeable printing devices sequentially movable therethrough, means for interrupting movement of the sheet during the operation of the printing means, a second printing means spaced from the first printing means and operable to make separate impres sionson the sections of said sheet in association with the impressions made on the sheet in the first printing means, the second printing means including a series of changeable printing devices sequentially movable therethrough, and
means for interrupting movement of the sheet during the operation of the second printing means and positioned to stop the sheet relative to the second printing means after the'sheetihas sections ,of sai'd'sheet froma printing form related moved from association with the first printing means.
3. In a printing machine, continuously operating means for moving sectional sheets through the machine, a printing means for making separate impressions on the sections of said sheets and including a series of changeable printing devices sequentially movable therethrough, means for interrupting movement of the sheets during the operation of said printing means, a, second printing means and spaced from the first printing means and operable to make separateimpressions on the sections of said sheets as they are moved 'thereinto -bythe continuously opera ing means, the second printing means including a series of changeable printing devices sequentially movable therethrough, means for interrupting movement of the sheets during the operation of the second printing means, the sheet movement interruptingmeans for the first and second printingmeansbeing positioned relative to each other to so interrupt movement of the sheets that said printing means simultaneously operate on corresponding sections of successive sheets.
4. In a printing machine, means for moving a sheet therethrough, a printing means for making impressions on said sheet and including a series of changeable printing devices, a second printing means including another series of changeable printing devices for making impressions on said sheet, and means to position the sheet in the first printing means to receive an impression therein from one of the first series of printing devices and then to position the sheet in the second printing means to receive an iripression therein from one of the second series of printing devices.
5 In a printing machine, means moving a series of printing devices therethrough, a platen, means moving a sectional sheet through the machine, means for interrupting movement of said sheet whereby said platen may make an impres 'sion-on each section thereof, and printing means for making impressions on each section of said sheet and including another series of printing devices respectively related to the printing devices cf the first series, and means "for interrupting movement of said sheet to position the respective sections thereof in said printing means.

In a printing machine, means moving a seri s of printing devices therethrough, a-platen for making impressions from said printing devices, means moving a sectional sheet past said platen, means for interrupting movement of said sheet to position the respective'sections to receive an impression from a printing device of said series, printing means including a second series of printing devices, and other means for interrupting movement of said sheets to position the sections thereof in the printing means to receive an impression from a printing device in the second series related to the impressions madeonthe sections by said platen.

In a printing machine, means moving a sectional sheet therethrough, a platen, means moving printing devices through the machine into printing position below the platen, means for holding each of said printing devices in printing position until saidplaten has made impressions from one of said printing devices on the related sections of said sheet, printing means, and means moving printing forms past said printing means and including means for holding the printing forms-in printing position relative to said printing means until said printing means has made impressions on the related sections of said sheet.
13. In a' printing machine, means fo-rmoving a sectional sheet theret...rough, a platonimeans moving printing devices through the machine into printing position below the platen, means for holding each of said printing devices in printing position until said platen has made impressions'from one of said printing devices on the related sections of thesheet printing means, means moving printing forms past said printing means and including means for holding the printing forms in printing position relative to said printing means until said printingmeans has made impressions on the related sections of the sheet, and common means for operating'the printing device moving means and the printing form moving means in timed relation whereby a definite relationship between the impressions made from the printing devices and the printing forms may be maintained.
14:. In a printing machine having two printing positions, means moving 'a sheet through the printing positions, separate means moving sepa rate series printing devices into said printing positions, separate means making impressions from the printing devices moved into said printing positions, and means for stopping said sheet first in one printing position and then in the other whereby related impressions may be made on said sheet.
15. In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means sequentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the rinting devices by the platen, printing means, means operating said printing means from said platen operating means, means 'for moving printing forms through the printing means, and means for stopping said sheets where by said printing means may make impressions thereon from said printing forms.
16. In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means sequentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheet whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the'platen, printing means, means operating said printing means from said platen operating means, means for moving printing forms through the printing means, means for stopping said'sheets whereby said printing means make impressions thereon from said printing forms, and said printing means being spaced from said platen whereby said printing means will make impressions on the sheet after it has moved from operative relation with said platen.
17. In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means sequentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the platen, printing means, means operating said printing means from said platen operating means, means for moving printing forms through the printing means, and means for stopping said sheets whereby said printing means may make impressions thereon from said printing forms, said means changing said printing devices and said printing forms operating in timed relation whereby imquentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the platen, print" ing means including a printing member, an ml; ing member, and means moving printing forms into position between said printing meml er and inking member, means stopping the sheets relative to said printing means, and means operable from the platen operating means for moving said printing member and inking member into printing relation with the printing form whereby impressions may be made on the sheets from said printing form.
19. In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means sequentially moving printing devices into printing position below saiclplaten, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the platen, printing means including a printing member, an inking memher, and means moving printing forms into position between said printing member said inking member, means stopping the sheets relative to said printing means, means operable from the platen operating means formoving said printing member and inking member into printing relation with the printing form whereby impressions may be made on the sheets from said printing for; and said printing means being spaced from said platen whereby said printing means will make impressions on the-sheet after it has moved from operative relation with said platen.

In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means soquentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the platen, printing means including a printing member, an inking member, and means moving printing forms into position between said printing member and said inking member, means stopping the sheets relative to said printing means, and means operable from the platen operating means for moving said printing member and inking member into printing relation with the printing form whereby impressions may be made on the sheets from said printing form, said printing means being spaced from said platen whereby said printing means will make impressions on the sheet after it has moved from operative relation with said platen, said means changing said printing devices and said printing forms operating in timed relation whereby impressions made by said printing means will be related to the impressions made from said printing devices,
21. In a printing machine, means successively moving sheets therethrough, a platen, means sequentially moving printing devices into printing position below said platen, means operating the platen, means operating in timed relation with the platen operating means for stopping the sheets whereby impressions may be made thereon from the printing devices by the platen, printing means, means operating said printing means from said platen operating means, means for moving printing forms through the printing means, means for stopping said sheets whereby said printing means may make impressions thereon from said printing forms, and means controlled from the printing devices for regulating the operation of the means moving the printing forms through the printing means.

In a printing machine which has two printing positions, means for moving a sheet through said printing positions, means moving printing devices through one of said printing positions, means moving printing forms through the other of said printing positions, and means cooperating with eachof said printing devices for controlling the movement of said printing forms as determined by the characteristics of said printing devices whereby impressions made onthe sheet from said printing forms may be maintained in a, definite relation-t0 the impressions made on'the sheet from the printing devices. v j I V 23. In a printing machine which has .two printing positions, means for moving a sheet through said printing positions, meansmoving printing devices having identifying means thereon through one of said printing positions, means moving printing forms through the other of said printing positions, and selector meanscooperating with the identifying means on the printing devices-for effecting operation'of the printing formmoving means upo v cooperation of the selector-means with predetermined of the identifying means whereby the impressions made from saidprinting forms may be maintained in a definite relation to the impressionsmade from said printing devices. In a printing machine which has two printing positions, means moving sheets through said printing positions, means moving printing devices having identifying means thereon through one of said printing positions, means moving printing forms through the other of said printing positions, and selector means cooperating with the identifying means on said printing devices for effecting the operation of the moving means for said printing forms upon cooperation .of the selector means with predetermined of the identifying-means whereby one of said printing forms may be maintained in printing position until. predetermined identifying means on one of said printing devices movesinto a certain position in the machine to thereby retain one of said printing forms in printing position until a number of impressions have been made therefrom onto sheets receiving impressions from the printingdevices in advance of the printing device carrying said predetermined identifying means.

A printing. means for a printing machine embodying an impression member, an inking member including an inking device, and means carryingprinting forms and positioned between the impression and inking members, means for moving said impression and inking members into printing position to makean impression from the printing form positioned therebetween, means for traversing said inking device over said form when the inkingmember is in printing position,
and means carried by an operative part of the means traversing said inking device over said form and operable to impart a step-by-step movementto, the means carrying said printing forms positioned between the impression and inking members, means for moving said impression and inking members into printing position to make an impression from the printing form positioned therebetween, .means for imparting a. step-bystep movement'to the means carrying said printing forms whereby said forms willbe successively positioned between saidimpression and inking members, and means controlling the operation of said ste'p-by-step movement impartingmeans whereby said printing forms maybe retained between said impression and inking members for a predetermined number of successive operations of said impressionand inking members and including a pair of ratchet wheels and a pawl cooperating with said wheels, said ratchet wheels having an equal number of teeth therein,,the teeth on one of said wheels being arranged to prevent the pawl from engaging the teeth on the other of said wheels between predetermined op,- erations of the pawl whereby said pawl motivates said wheel simultaneously on other than said predetermined operations thereon V 27. A printing means for a printingmachin embodying a pair of arms, a common pivot for said arms, an impression member carried by one of said arms, an inking member carried by the other of said arms, means moving printing forms between said impression and inking members, a reciprocal member, means connecting said arms to said reciprocal member whereby said impression and inking members are moved towardand away from each other into printing position relative to a printing form positioned therebetween, and means for reciprocating said inking. member relative to said form' when said inkingmember is moved into printing position.

A printing means for printing machines embodying a pair of arms, a common pivot. for said arms, a platen carried by one of said arms, an inking means carried by the other .of said arms, means moving platen forms between said printing and inking means, a reciprocal member, and links pivotally' connected to said reciprocal member .and to said arms and extended in adetermined angular relation whereby operation of said reciprocal member varies said angular relation to move said arms toward and away from each other to make an impression from a printing form' positioned between said platen and inking means. A printing means for printing machines embodying a pair of arms, ajcommon pivot for said arms, a platen carried by one of said. arms, an inking means carried by the other of said arms, means moving printing forms between said platen and inking means, a reciprocal memberfa link pivotally connected to one of said arms and said reciprocal member and normally extending at right angles to said reciprocal member, another link pivotally connected to the other ofsaid arms and to said reciprocal member and normally extending at an acute anglev to said reciprocal member, and means moving said reciprocal member to alter the direction of extent of said links with respect to said reciprocal member. to move said arms toward each other to make an impression from a printing form positioned between said platen and inking means. In a printing machine which has two printing positions, means .for moving asheet through said printingpositions, meansjmoving printing devices through one of said printing positions, means moving printing forms throughthe other of said .printingpositions, and means operembodying a yieldable portion including a member engageable with identifying means on the printing devices for regulating operation of said yield-able portion to control the movement of said printing forms. 32, In a printing machine, a platen, a magazine adapted to receive a series of printing devices, a guideway for directing the printing devices from said magazine to printing position below said platen, means for moving printing devices through said guidew-ay, said guideway having an opening therein intermediate the ends thereof, and means below said opening to receive a printing device moved from position below said platen upon movement of another printing device into'position below saidplaten and including an inclined member disposed below said printing device guideway and terminating in a substantially vertically extending part adapted to direct printing devices passing through said opening to a storage member.

Ina printing machine having a pair of printing positions, a platen at each of the printing positions, means for sequentially moving series of printing devices through each of said printing positions independently, an operating shaft, independent means on said shaft for operating said platens, and means for. .moving a sheet through said printing positions whereby said platens may successively operate to make impressions on said sheet. In a printing machine having a pair of printing positions, a platen at each of'the printing positions, means for sequentially moving independent series of printing devices through the printing positions, an operating shaft, independent means on said shaft'for operating said platens, independent means operated by said shaft for operating the printing device moving means, means for moving a sheet through said printing positions whereby said platens may successively operate to make impressions on said sheet; and means operated by the operating means for one of the printing device moving means and including means cooperating with the printing devices of the series of printing devices moved by said one of the printing device moving means and adapted to control the means operating the other of the printing device moving means to thereby control movement of the series of printing devices moved through the machine by said other moving means. In a-printing machine having a pair of printing positions, a platen at each of the printing positions, means for sequentially moving independent series of printing devices through the printingpositions, the printing devices of one of said series having identifying means thereon, an operating shaft, independent means on said shaft for operating said platens, independent means operated by said shaft for operating the printing device moving means, means for moving a sheet through said printing positions whereby said platens may successively operate to makeimpressions on said sheet, and control means operated by the operating means operating the moving means for the series of printing devices having identifying means thereon and including means cooperating with the identifying means on said printing devices and adapted to control the means operating the other of the printing device moving means to thereby control movement of the series of printing devices moved through the machine by said'other moving means.

In a printing machine having a pair of printing positions, a platen at each'of the printing positions, means for sequentially moving independent series of printing devices through the printing positions, the printing devices of one of said series having identifying means thereon, an operating shaft, independent means on said shaft for operating said platens, independent means operated by said shaft for operating the printing device moving means, means for moving a sheet through said printing positions whereby said platens may successively operate to make impressions on said sheet, and control means operated by the operating means operating the moving means for the seriesof printing devices having identifying means thereon and including 'means cooperating with the identifying means on said printing devices and adapted to control the means operating the other of the printing device moving means to thereby control movement of the seriesof printing devices moved through the machine by said'other moving means, said control means including parts capable of con- 'joint and relative movement and" embodying a part operable to prevent operation of said other printing device moving means upon relative movement of said parts.

A' printing couple adapted for use in a printing machine and including an impression member and means for moving printing devices into printing relation with said impression member, said moving meansincluding a pair of discs mounted in side by side relation, one of said discs being of smaller diameter than the other, each of said discs having notches in the periphery thereof, at least one of the notches in the periphery of the larger disc extending thereinto below the periphery of the smaller disc and the other notches in said larger disc terminating outwardly of the periphery of the smaller disc, a pawl successively engageable in the notches in the larger disc and adapted to engage a notch in the smaller disc upon engagement of the pawl into a notch in the larger disc extending below the periphery of the smaller disc whereupon the pawl engages notches in both discs, means operating said pawl in timed relation with the impression member whereby said pawl may drive said discs, said pawl driving the smaller disc only when it engages a notch" in the periphery thereof, and means connecting the smaller disc to the moving means whereby the printing devices are advanced only upon movement of the smaller disc c
