Abstract

486,869. Typewriters &c. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1936, No. 33942. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1935. [Class 100 (iv)] Relay type-bar actions.-In recordcontrolled actions comprising typecarriers each provided with a sliding stop - member which co - operates with an abutment to effect typeselection by releasing a coupling- member on the type-carrier from a reciprocable driving-member and by locking the type-carrier to a stationary rack at a point determined by the position of a hole in a column, the abutment is movable to a position determined by another hole in the column to select another type. In the action shown in the Figure, each type-bar 26 of a set is provided with a slide 33 having projections 46 corresponding to the 1 .. 9 perforations and co-operating with a stop - pawl 47 which is mounted on a bell-crank 82 and is normally restrained by a latch 76 in connection with the armature of a magnet 78. The type-bar is provided with letter and numeral types, each of the types 9 .. 2 being followed by three letter-types, and the type 1 being followed by two letter-types, a blank, and a zero type. The slide 33 rests on the arm 43 of a pawl 36 which is mounted on the type-bar and has a lug 41 engaging a cross-head 25 operated by cams 13, 15 on a shaft 12. The type-bar is associated with spring-urged discs 51, 61 loosely mounted on a rock-shaft 50 which is connected by a link 69 to a camfollower 70 co-operating with a cam 87 on the shaft 12. The disc 51 has an arm 52 normally resting on a bail 53 carried by sectors 55 which, to prevent twisting of the bail, are engaged by pinions 56. One sector is connected by a link 58 to a cam-follower 59 co-operating with a cam 60 on the shaft 12. The disc 51 is formed with notches 71, corresponding to the R, X, O perforations, and co-operating with a pawl 72 which is normally restrained by a latch 73 co-operating with the latch 76. The disc 61 is formed with steps 81 co-operating with the bell-crank 82, and carries a pawl 63 and a latch 62 therefor, the pawl co-operating with notches in a stationary bar 65. The circuits between the magnets 78 and the upper and lower brushes UB, LB include card-lever contacts UCL, LCL, and contacts 112, 114 controlled by a cam 113 so arranged that the upper brushes read the perforations R, X, O on a card 10 during one cycle, and the lower brushes read the perforations 9 .. 1 of the same card during the next cycle. The following operations occur during selection of a letter-type, for instance 4 which is represented by the X and 3 perforations. When the O position on the card passes the upper brushes, the bail 53 is moving downwards, and the disc 51 is rotating clockwise. When the X perforation is read, the magnet 78 releases the latches 76, 73, the pawl 72 engages the X notch 71, and the disc 51 is locked. The shaft 50 then rocks, the disc 61 rotates until the latch 62 is released by means of a cam 79 on the disc 51, and the pawl 63 engages one of the notches in the bar 65 and locks the disc 61. When the card passes the lower brushes, the cross-head 25 rises until the magnet 78 permits the stop-pawl 47 to engage the projection 46 on the slide 33 corresponding to the 3 perforation. The type-bar and slide continue to rise until the bell-crank 82 is arrested by the middle step 81, whereupon the pawl 36 is rocked clear of the cross-head and into engagement with a stationary rack 40, the type-bar being thereby locked with the L type in the printing line. The pawl is provided with a latch 45. For selecting the zero type, the slide 33 has a notch 121 for engaging a stop-pawl 120 which is normally restrained by the disc 61. When the zero perforation is read, the pawl is released from the disc, and when the type-bar rises, the pawl enters the notch and arrests the type-carrier. After the type-bar has been locked, the stop-pawls 47 are restored by a bail 101 operated by a cam 108. Between the passage of the 1 and O positions on the card, the latches 73, 76 are resored by a bail 88 on a shaft 90 connected by toggle-linkage 91, 92, 94 to a cam-follower 97 engaging a cam 98 on the shaft 12.
