Abstract

542,693. Wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 17, 1940, No. 10492. Convention date, June 17, 1939. [Class 40 (v)] Two waves of the same frequency but differing in phase are modulated differentially in phase by the signal and are radiated from aerials giving different planes of polarization. Carrier from a source 10 is applied through a phase-retarding coil I, and a phase-advancing condenser J 1 to the respective grids of valve V 1 , V 2 the joint output of which feeds an aerial 36 through a line Y. The amplification of the valves is varied in opposite senses by applying the signal from source 40 differentially to the two grids, producing a phase-modulated wave in the aerial 36. Similar connexions are made through valves V 3 , V 4 and line Z to an aerial 38 arranged to give radiation of different polarization from that of aerial 36. The lines Y, Z are of different electrical length so that there is a phase difference between the currents in the aerials, and the phase modulation increases or decreases this phase difference according to the sense of the modulating voltage. At the receiver, the radiations are picked up by aerials responsive to the respective polarizations, and are combined vectorially to produce an amplitude-modulated wave which is detected by an ordinary receiver. The aerials at both stations may be dipoles set up at right-angles. Specifications 411,638 and 542,005 are referred to.
