Abstract

542,581. Vehicle body mountings. GIBBS, G. M., and TUSTING, T. R. July 13, 1940, Nos. 11687/40, 12535/40 and 4019/41. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXI] A self-propelled amphibian vehicle is fitted with wheels 3 for the normal propulsion of the vehicle either on land or in water and with a series of endlees tracks 20, 21 adapted to propel the vehicle over soft terrain on which the wheels 3 would not function. As shown the wheels 3 are accommodated in recesses R on each side of the body 1 and are fitted with vanes or paddles 16 for water propulsion, while the body is preferably pivotally supported with respect to the wheels by means of rollers 5 on a frame 6 engaging internally with an annulus 4 on each wheel. The annuli are furnished with teeth so that they may be driven from a motor 7 through gearing 10, 11, 12, 14, clutches being interposed so that the wheels can be independently driven for steering purposes. The frames 6 are preferably vertically adjustable on guides 24 so that they may be raised prior to bringing the endless tracks 20, 21 into use. These tracks 20, 21 preferably extend across substantially the entire width. of the vehicle and comprise a number of tracks 20 of almost the same length as the body 1 and a number of shorter tracks 21 located in line with the recesses R. For balancing purposes when running on land a retractable auxiliary supporting wheel 17 may be mounted at one end of the body 1. An additional propeller 15 may also be fitted for propelling the vehicle in water. In a modification each side wheel 3 is replaced by a pair of wheels mounted on a frame in tandem.
