Abstract

1,080,706. Propelling vehicles; aircraft undercarriages; amphibious vehicles; vehicle wheels. G. K. TAYLOR. Oct. 21, 1964, No. 42877/64. Headings B7A, B7C, B7G, B7H and B7V. Propulsion means for a vehicle comprise a driving pulley 3, a deformable roller 11 and an endless chain or belt 12 encircling the pulley and roller so as to contact the supporting surface beneath the roller 11. The belt 12 shown is formed with external ribs 5 and internal ribs 5<SP>1</SP> meshing with corresponding grooves in the pulley 3. A frame 8 carrying the roller 11 may be resiliently suspended from the vehicle by torsion bar, leaf or coil springs and shock absorbers. Two rollers may be arranged one on each side of the vehicle (Figs. 1, 4, not shown), the respective pulleys 3 being driven through differential gearing and the frames 8 being positioned by servomechanism controlled by the driver or by a gyroscope to ensure that the vehicle remains level on uneven ground, to facilitate passing over obstacles or to place the vehicle in a desired attitude. An inclined scraper plate 14, or a brush or compressed-air jet removes foreign matter from the inner surface of the belt 12. The pulley 3 may be braked by a drum or disc brake. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the vehicle is supported on the roller (11) by rigid rollers (18, 19). On a vehicle (Figs. 6, 7, not shown), for use in water or over ice and snow the rollers (11) are arranged with their axes extending longitudinally of the vehicle and the belts (12) have helicoidal ribs (20). Steering may be effected by differentially driving the pulleys. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the roller is mounted in a steerable frame (25) which can also oscillate about an axis extending longitudinally of the vehicle. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the propelling means is suspended from the body (17) of an aircraft by articulated links 16 retractable by mechanical, electrical or hydraulic servomechanism. The roller 11 may be an elastic tube or a low-pressure tyre, and, as shown, is divided into a series of closed air compartments 13 arranged around a rim 10. The roller may be filled with oil and used for its transportation.
