Abstract

542,128. Polyamides. MONCRIEFF, R. W., and WHEATLEY, E. W. April 25, 1940, No. 7437. [Class 2 (iii)] Polyamides, containing carboxylic acid amide or sulphonamide groups, and having filament- or film-forming properties, are separated from the re-action mass obtained at the conclusion of the polymerization process by treating the re-action mass with a liquid which is a solvent at atmospheric temperature for the polyamide which is contained in the mass, treatment being continued until the polyamide is dissolved, and then precipitating the polyamide by mixing the solution, if necessary after filtering, with a liquid which is a non-solvent for the polyamide and is miscible with the solvent present in the solution, both the solution and non-solvent being at a temperature not exceeding 100‹ C., e.g. atmospheric temperature, 40‹ C. or 60‹ C. Specified solvents are lower aliphatic acids, e.g. acetic acid and formic acid, aqueous solutions of mineral acids, e.g. hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid, halogenated phenols, e.g. ortho chlorphenol, cresol and xylenol. When mineral acid solutions are used, a part of the water present may be replaced by a water-miscible liquid such as alcohol or acetone. Specified non-solvent liquids are water, acetone, alcohol and a 50 per cent. aqueous solution of acetone. After precipitation, the polyamide is washed, and dried at a low temperature, e.g. 100-110‹ C. Examples are given.
