Abstract

Resinous condensation products are purified by treating a solution of them with a washing fluid capable of dissolving undesired constituents, incompletely condensed products and impurities and evaporating the solvent liquid from the mixture in order to precipitate the artificial resin as a pulverulent resin. Resins to which the process is applicable include condensation products of aldehydes with phenols, urea or thiourea, or polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation products. Suitable solvent liquids include methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol and acetone whilst washing liquids include benzene, toluene and water. In examples, (1) a solution of a phenol-formaldehyde resol in acetone is washed with xylene, and (2) a solution of an alkaline cresol-formaldehyde condensate in alcohol and acetone is washed in xylene to yield in both cases a purified resin in powder form.
