Abstract

1,253,607. Removal of metal ions from organic acids by ion exchange. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 10 Nov., 1969 [9 Nov., 1968], No. 54895/69. Heading B1J. [Also in Division C2] Ions of a heavy metal having a specific gravity greater than 5, for example copper, lead, iron or nickel, are removed from anhydrous organic acid having a dissociation constant at 25‹C greater than 1.76.10<SP>-5</SP> by a process which comprises contacting the organic acid, for example at a temperature of from 10 to 140‹C, with a macroreticularstructured strongly acidic cation exchange resin which has been dried by treatment initially with acetic acid and subsequently with a mixture of acetic acid and acetic anhydride, for example a mixture containing from 5 to 30 weight per cent of acetic anhydride. Prior to such treatment, the resin may be activated by contact with aqueous hydrochloric acid followed by washing with water. The resin may be a polymer of styrene or a copolymer of styrene and divinyl benzene, the polymer or copolymer being sulphonated in the nucleus. The organic acid may be formic acid, a halogenated acetic acid, for example a chlorinated acetic acid, chloropropionic acid, bromopropionic acid, glycolic acid, acrylic acid or crotonic acid; alternatively, the organic acid may be a mixture of acetic acid, monochloroacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid, which mixture may contain a minor proportion of trichloroacetic acid and may be obtained in the manufacture of monochloroacetic acid from acetic acid.
