Abstract
541,554. Toughening glass. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd. May 30, 1940, No. 9477. Convention date, July 13, 1939. [Class 56] Apparatus for toughening a glass sheet comprises walls arranged adjacent to the surfaces of the sheet to prevent or diminish loss of heat by radiation from the time the sheet leaves the furnace until it is within the chilling-device. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the perforated inner walls 2a of the chilling device 2 are continued downwards to the mouth of the furnace 1 by means of walls 3. The surfaces of the walls 2a and 3 are covered with layers 4 of metal having a high reflective power for the radiation emitted by the hot sheet. Aluminium or highly-polished steel are suitable metals for the layers 4, and the aluminium may be sprayed on to the wall surfaces. In another construction, shown in Fig. 2, the walls 6 are supported by cables 13, so that they can be lifted with the sheet while the latter is passing from the furnace to the cooler, and then removed to allow the sheet to be cooled. In another construction, the walls are provided with top, bottom and side pieces to form a bin-like casing which encloses the sheet. This casing is heated in an auxiliary furnace, so that the glass sheet is surrounded by heated walls while moving from the furnace to the cooler.
