Abstract

540,905. Pigment pastes; paints; inks. NUODEX PRODUCTS, CO., Inc. Dec. 22, 1939, Nos. 31712, 31713 and 31714. Convention dates, Dec. 22, 1938, June 27, 1939 and Oct. 31, 1939. [Class 95] [Also in Groups IV and XV]. A method of speeding up the making of pigment pastes comprises commingling a pigment and a liquid vehicle, then adding a solution of xylol-soluble rubber having a viscosity of not less than 50 centipoises at 25‹ C. with the rubber present in an amount not exceding 2¢ per cent. based on the total weight of the resulting mass and thereafter milling said mass. The term " rubber " is used as including natural rubber, balata gum, and synthetic or artificial rubbers such as isobutylene polymers. Examples are given of suitable rubber solutions prepared from):- (1) crepe rubber and high flash naphtha: (2) an isabutylene polymer and xylol: (3) balata gum and toluol: (4) balata gum and hydrogenated petroleum solvent: (5) smoked rubber balata gum and xylol: and (6) crepe rubber and a hydrogenated petroleum solvent. Examples are also given of pigmented pastes. paints, enamels and news inks comprising rubber solutions (5) or (6) above, together with:- (7) titanium dioxide and an estergum varnish: (8) and (9) para red or chrome green and a phenolic varnish: (10) leaded zinc, asbestine, titanium dioxide, white lead bodied perilla oil and raw linseed oil: (11) burnt umber, iron oxide, carbon black, raw soya bean oil and raw linseed oil: (12) red iron oxide china clay, alkyd resin and xylol: (13) titanium dioxide, blown castor cil and butylcellosolve: (14) titanium dioxide, shellac solution and dibutylphthalate: (15) carbon black, resin varnish. gilsonite varnish, methyl violet toner and news ink oil: and (16) chrome green and raw linseed cil.
