Abstract
540,776. Shock absorbers. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., (formerly AIRCRAFT COMPONENTS Ltd.), and SMITH, H. H. June 13, 1940, No. 10308. [Class, 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A shock absorber, particularly for use with a landing ski or endless-track undercarriage for aircraft, comprises two resiliently yieldable units one within the other operating independently. An aircraft undercarriage is shown comprising a ski 27 pivoted to a link 6 hinged to a fixed leg 4, two telescoping parts 12, 13 of an oleo-pneumatic shock absorber being pivoted at 11, 10 respectively to the leg 4 and to a bracket 9 on the link 6. The part 13 constitutes a compressed air chamber having a sliding piston 14 which is displaced by oil forced through a damping orifice in a head 15 as the part 13 is forced into the cylinder 12. Surrounding the cylinder 12 is another pair of telescoping cylinders 18, 19 enclosing a compression spring 17, trunnions 23 on the cylinder 19 being connected by links 24, one on each side of the device, to lugs 26 on pedestals 8 on the ski 27. During flight the ski is maintained in a slightly tail-down position, and during alighting the spring 17 controls the pitching movements of the ski while the main landing shocks are taken by the oleo-pneumatic shock absorber. Three or more resilient connections, instead of two, may be embodied in one composite resilient unit.
