Abstract
540,625. Pipe joints. CUTHILL, J., and OIL WELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 12, 1940, No. 10258. [Class 99 (i)] In a releasable pipe joint for use in welldrilling and like operations comprising a threaded spigot 3 engaging a corresponding threaded socket 1, the spigot is provided with a collar 12 having a helical face, of opposite hand to the screwthreads, engaging a corresponding helical face 9 on the spigot, both helical faces being stepped for engagement at 10. When the joint is screwed up, the helical faces become clamped together by a wedging action, the stepped faces 10 being slightly separated. If the lower portion of the drilling - stem becomes jammed, the upper portion is then rotated anticlockwise, so as to unlock the helical faces and bring the steps 10 into engagement again, thereupon the joint may then be unscrewed. The stepped portions 10 may be united by a fragile or extensible member 15, and the collar 12 is provided with a screw 13 engaging a helical groove 11 in the spigot parallel to the helical faces. A packing-ring 17 prevents leakage of liquid from the internal bore into the joint.
