Abstract
465,538. Screw-and-nut gearing. SPANG, CHALFONT, & CO., Inc. Jan. 27, 1936, No. 2520. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1935. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A screw joint for pipes, particularly oil well casing, comprises tapered screwthreaded members wherein substantially the whole of the thread has flat crest and root surfaces which are parallel to the axes of the pipes. The threaded portions of a socket 1 and spigot 2 are shown out of scale. The crest of one thread and the root of the other are cylindrical for a short portion at each end of the joint. The thread of the spigot vanishes into the cylindrical surface 17 on which the end of the socket thread bears. The socket is screwed up until its end abuts against the shoulder 22. The threads engage on one flank only, and the crest of one thread only is in contact with the root of the other. The flanks 19 of the threads are at an angle of not less than 80‹ to the axis of the pipes. Tapered sealing surfaces 30, 34 are of the same taper as the thread. The end of the spigot thread has a steeper taper 61. The taper of the thread and sealing faces is between one and two inches per foot.
