Abstract
540,611. Stapling. LINSKY, B., and LINSKY, J., (trading as SPEED PRODUCTS CO.). April 17, 1940, Nos. 6964 and 6965. Convention dates, July 22, 1939 and Feb. 17, 1940. [Class 89 (iii)] In a stapling machine of the type in which a driver is adapted to force a U-shaped staple through a passage in the head of the machine and through a thickness of material placed at the end of the passage, the machine having a magazine for the staples and means for feeding the staples into the path of the driver, a cover is provided tor closing the magazine, the staple-ejecting driver being movably guided by the cover and having a shock-absorbing plunger movable relatively to the driver. The head is weighted in line with and above the driver to reduce recoil. Shockabsorbing spring means normally hold the plunger depressed, and power spring means normally hold the driver depressed. Means are provided for indicating the near exhaust of the staples. Staples 22 are carried by an inverted channel-shaped strip 16 and urged toward the driver by a follower 24 advanced by a spring 155. The driver 90 is carried by a block 89 bored to receive a spring 80 abutting at its upper end against plates 76 of a recoil-absorbing laminated metal core. The bore through the block is divided by a plate 100, and below the plate a shock-absorbing spring 107 stronger than the spring 100 abuts against a plunger 104 normally contacting an anvil 110. The upper part of the stapler serves as a cover for the magazine, to which it is pivoted at 45, a saddle or seat 54 having upstanding sides 52 normally widely spaced from the sides of the cover but laterally movable against locking means provided by dimples in a spring member 60 to permit either upstanding side to contact with the side of the cover. The spring 155 passes round a roller 152 carried by a latch 146, the pivot of the roller co-operating with recesses 162 in projections from a housing 13 for the magazine, to hold the cover in position. An operating handle 119 for the stapler is pivoted at 116 to the cover. When the handle is depressed against the thrust of a spring 134 a pawl 120 raises the driver until the pawl slips past the edge of a notch 130 to allow the spring 80 to depress the block 89 to drive the staple. To prevent the end staples being lifted when the cover is lifted about the pivot 45, a bridge piece 175 joins the sides of the magazine housing near the delivery end. To indicate the near exhaust of the staples, the follower 24 has a red spot which ultimately registers with an opening 171 in the magazine housing.
