A container 10 such as a filter chamber for a gas producer plant is provided with a dished cover 16 having a soft flexible jointing material 22 in an annular channel 21 engaged by the circular rim 11 of the container. A cross bar 25 engages in recesses 14 in upwardly extending lugs 12, 13, and carries a threaded spindle 19 with a head 18 engaging a socket 1.7 on the cover, so that the cover may be forced downward by rotation of the spindle. The cover carries two forks 23, 24, embracing the bar 25 so that when the bar is rotated to release it from the lugs 12, 13, the cover 16 is also rotated thereby producing .a rubbing action between the rim 11 and jointing material 22 so that adhesion between the two when withdrawing the cover is prevented.
