Abstract

540,462. Stapling machines. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., NASMITH, J. I., and KIRBY, W. May 25, 1940, No. 9241. [Class 89 (iii)] A corner wire stapling machine adapted to form drive and clinch angle-type staples is provided with means for supporting the angle crown of the staple and the legs on all sides during penetration, means for holding the joint together during the driving of the staple and for clinching the staple legs on the inside of the work. The staple is formed over an angled loop bar by a former 1 grooved to receive the staple legs. The driver 5 is shaped to the outside of the crown of the staple, and the inside of the staple is supported during the driving by surfaces 7, 8 of a member 6 pivoted to the former at 9 and urged anti-clockwise in Fig. 10 by a spring. As the driver descends the member 6 is swung clockwise, but still supports the crown and legs of the staple as the legs are driven into the work. To prevent the sheets 16 being pushed apart the anvil 14 has serrations 15, 25, 27. The clinchers 18 are guided between upper and lower curved members and are swung by any suitable mechanism, after the staple is driven, to bend the projecting ends of the legs flat against the work.
