Abstract
539,943. Grinding crankshafts. BAUMGARTEN, G. March 29, 1940. No. 5650. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] In a crankshaft lathe a master crankshaft b having the' same principal dimensions is run in synchronism with the crankshaft a to be finished the master crankshaft having pivoted on each throw a tool holder c which is supported on the corresponding throw of the workpiece in such manner that the tool d automatically follows the reduction of pin diameter of the work piece. The end of each holder d, c is fitted with a shaft 9 carrying a cam f and a roller e bearing on the crank pin. At each revolution of the crankshaft a pawl n operates worm gearing 1 connected by a chain i to the shaft g thus rotating the cam f to vary the relationship between the roller e and tool d in accordance with the distances through which these parts move to reach the final diameter B, Fig. 1 of the crank pins on the work. It is seen from Fig. 1 that the tool d approaches the work axis along the arc s while the roller e approaches along the arc r. The main bearing portions of the shaft may be finished at the same time as the crank pins. Grinding wheels may be used instead of turning-tools.
