Abstract

539,666. Electric irons. COLDAIR, Ltd., and SAUNDERS, N. F. T. March 11, 1940, No. 4531. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electric iron is provided with a thermostatic control having means whereby the temperature corresponding to a given setting of the control knob may be adjusted from outside the cover plate. The heating element 3 is clamped between the sole plate 1 and a U-shaped member 2, and a domed cover 4 fits around the edges of the sole plate. A bi-metallic strip 7 is arranged in a recess 8 and is secured by a clamping plate 10 to a raised portion 9 of the sole plate. Two insulated spring metal strips 12, 13 projecting from a bracket 14 are connected to screws 15, 16 and carry contacts 17, 18 which complete the circuit to the heating element. The upper strip 12 is controlled by the strip 7 through a glass rod 19 passing through the lower strip 13. The lower strip 13 is controlled by a porcelain cam 22 having an inclined upper edge, mounted on a vertical spindle. Rotation of the cam controls the temperature point at which the contacts are separated by the bi-metallic strip. A transverse bar 24 secured to the sole plate carries a bush 25 containing a sleeve 27 which is threaded internally in its upper half, into which a pin 28 is screwed.
