Abstract

539,597. Vehicle suspensions. DAIMLER CO., Ltd., and SIMPSON, C. M. May 15, 1940, No. 8679. Class 108 (ii)] A spring suspension system for motor vehicles having each wheel independently sprung provides a rate of lineal compression of the spring which increases with equal additions to the load. A helical spring 7 is held between a fixed head 8 on the chassis 5 and a base 6 pivoted to the upper arm 3 of a linkage 3, 4 connecting the hub carrier 2 to the chassis 5. An extension 10 to the base 6 is pivoted to a link 9 hinged at 11 to the chassis. As the wheel 1 rises relatively to the chassis the effective leverage distance A between spring axis and chassis pivot of arm 3 becomes less, thus effecting greater lineal compression of the spring, which is assumed to be of the type giving approximately equal compressions for equal loads. A wire 14 connected to both arm 4 and the chassis at 15 limits drop of the wheel to the position where compression of the spring 7 becomes nil, and a bump rubber 16 &c. limits its rise. In a modification the head 8 swivels, and telescoping members connect it to the base 6, the extension 10 and link 9 being omitted.
