Abstract

538,914. Hydroxynaphthoic acid amides. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Feb. 20, 1940, Nos. 3192 and 6940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] A colour development coupler for use in conjunction with an aromatic amino developing agent is a tertiary amide of 1-naphthol-2- carboxylic acid or of 1-naphthol-5-carboxylic acid, the substituents on the amide nitrogen atom being alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals not containing solubilizing groups, particularly benzyl or alkyl substituted phenyl. Either or both rings of the naphthol radical may be substituted by halogen, which may be introduced after formation of the tertiary amide. The couplers specified are (1) the following derivatives of 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoylamide :- (a) N-methyl : N-phenyl, (b) N-ethyl : N-xnaphthyl, (c) N-iso-amyl : N-phenyl, (d) N-γ- phenyl-n-propyl N-p-sec-amylphenyl, (e) N-γ- phenyl-n-propyl : N-phenyl, (f) N-iso-butyl : N- p-n-amylphenyl, (g) N-benzyl : N-p-sec-amylphenyl, (h) N-n-butyl : N-α-naphthyl, (i) N-namyl : N-α-naphthyl, (j) N-iso-butyl : N-p-secamylphenyl, (k) N-n-amyl : N-#-naphthyl, and (2) N-n-amyl : N-p-sec-amyl-phenyl and the following derivatives of 1-hydroxy-5-naphthoylamide :-(a) N-methyl : N-phenyl, (b) N-γ- phenyl-n-propyl : N-phenyl. The couplers may be prepared by reacting secondary amines with hydroxynaphthoyl chlorides, acyl-hydroxynaphthoyl chlorides, hydroxynaphthoyl esters or acylhydroxynaphthoyl esters, hydrolyzing off the acyl group where necessary. The first Provisional Specification refers also to the use as a colour coupler of 1-hydroxy- 2-(N -nbutyl-N - #-naphthyl)-naphthoylamide. The second Provisional Specification refers also to the use as a colour coupler of 5-hydroxy- 1-(N-phenyl : N-γ-phenyl-n-propyl)-naphthoylamide.
