Abstract
538,900. Supporting heavy bodies on underframes. NORTH, O. D., HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. April 12, 1940, No. 6683. [Class 108 (ii)] A tank or heavy body 1 is mounted on a motor or other vehicle frame 3 by two sets of supports 5, 6, the set 5 comprising a pair of widely-spaced supports and the set 6 comprising a pair of closely-spaced supports located substantially on the centre line of the vehicle and each incorporating its own cushioning means. In the construction shown each support 5 comprises a bracket built up from plates 7, 9, 15 welded together and to the frame members 3, 4, a cylinder 10 being also welded to the bracket. The rear end of the tank 1 carries two plunger members 11, one inserted in each cylinder 10, rubber collars 20 and a rubber disc 19 being provided to cushion shocks. The plunger and cylinder are secured together by a bolt 18, a rubber washer 21 being interposed between the bracket and a metal washer 22. The plungers 11 are bolted at 13 to feet 14 on the tank, these feet being connected together by a band or strap 23 and a plate 14a. The forward support 6 for the tank comprises a pair of longitudinal tubes 27 fixed by transverse plates 28 to the frame and gripped by rubber blocks 26 enclosed in a frame 31, 32 secured by plates 37, 38 to the tank. The blocks 26 are square exteriorly and are compressed in the frame 31, 32 by bolts 34, bulging of the blocks being limited by comer plates 35 on the frame and rings 36 on the tubes 27. According to the Provisional Specification a single broad cushioning support may be provided at 6 in the case of light tanks or bodies.
