Abstract

684,197. Vehicle body suspensions; resilient supports. THOMPSON BROS. (BILSTON), Ltd., BRINDLEY, H. C., MOTOR SERVICES (LONDON), Ltd., HORLE, J. F. Oct. 3, 1951 [Oct. 14, 1950], No. 25097/50. Classes 108 (ii) and 108 (iii). A mounting for the tank of a tanker road vehicle comprises, at or toward each end of the tank and between the latter and a transverse member of the chassis, a pivotal mounting connection having a fore-and-aft axis in the longitudinal centre plane of the vehicle, each such pivotal mounting connection incorporating a rubber or like resilient bush which operates in torsion to resist relative angular movements of the tank and chassis about the pivotal axis. In the arrangement shown, an encircling segmental ring or band 13, Fig. 2, is frictionally clamped to the forward end of a tank 11 and carries a bracket 15 and a pair of foot brackets 26, 26 depending from an arcuate plate member 15x welded to the ring. The bracket 15 is connected through a pivotal connection 17 to a transverse chassis member 16 connected between chassis side members 10, 10 and each bracket 26 bears upon the adjacent end of the member 16 through a rubber pad 28 recessed into the foot of the bracket. The pivotal connection 17 comprises a radially precompressed rubber bush 19, Fig. 8, disposed between inner and outer metal sleeves 20 and 21, the outer sleeve 21 being secured in a bearing tube 22 incorporated in the bracket 15. The inner sleeve 20 which is a push-fit on a metal bearing tube 23 surrounding a pivot-pin 18, is clamped by nuts 24, 24 to the transverse member 16. A similar arrangement of brackets and pivotal connection are used to support the rearward end of the tank. The rubber pads 28 may be arranged to operate in shear or partly in shear and partly in compression. The tank, intermediate its ends, is supported on the chassis members 10, 10 by means of brackets depending from a plate welded to a band clamped to the tank and bearing on the members 10, 10 through rubber " sandwich " mountings. The rings 13 at the forward and rearward ends of the tank may be secured in position to each other and the tank or to the tank only by welding, which may be additional or alternative to clamping bolts 14. According to the Provisional Specification a rubber " sandwich " may be disposed between each end of the transverse chassis members and the respective side member.
