Abstract

538,486. Valve amplifying circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., ROCHE, A. H., and BLASHILL, T. Feb. 2, 1940, No. 2069. [Class 40 (v)] In an amplifier in which gain is controlled by varying the negative feedback by varying a resistance in the cathode lead means are provided to compensate for change in grid bias produced. The Fig. shows an arrangement in which the gain of the valve V, is effected by adjustment of the slider of cathode potentiometer P, connected between the cathode and earth and the bias correction is obtained by connecting the heating battery through a limiting resistance R 24 to the potentiometer. A similar gain control is applied to valve V 2 except that resistances R 12 , R 13 are inserted in a single step by switch KD, auxiliary contacts KD of which shortcircuit inductances L 1 , L 2 to correct for the change in input capacity. Inductance L 3 is provided in the anode circuit of valve V 2 to compensate phase change. The decoupling C 7 , R 11 and C 9 , R 16 further prevents phase shift at low frequencies, but by suitable choice of the latter elements correction of a small residual phase angle may be effected. The high tension supply should be of low impedance and may include stabilising means as described in Specification 526,665, [Group XXXV].
