Abstract

537,944. Automatic volume control in repeaters. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. June 5, 1940, No. 9813. Convention date, July 15, 1939. [Class 40 (iv)] A gain-increaser controlled by syllabic impulses is arranged to be operated only by the rising part of such impulses and comprises means for reducing the rate of gain-increase when the signals are above a pre-determined level. As shown, the gain of a transmission circuit is determined by the condition of a rectifier network 9 which is biased by means of the plate current of a push-pull pentode amplifier 7, 8 in the transmission path in co-operation with a circuit including a resistance 41 and the heater battery 33. The value of the plate current of the amplifier is governed by the voltage on a small condenser 27 shunted by a larger condenser 28 in series with resistances 29 ... 31 as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,156,622. A band of signal frequencies near 1200 cycles filtered from the input circuit, shorn of peaks by a discharge tube 83 and rectified by the diode portion of a diode-triode valve 49 produces syllablefrequency impulses in the anode circuit of the triode portion with the aid of resistance condenser circuits 54, 55 and 57 ... 60. These impulses pass through a transformer 68 associated with rectifiers 70, 71, arranged so that only the rising part of an impulse is effective, to a relay 61 which delivers impulses from a potentiometer 75, 76 to discharge condensers 27, 28 and so increase the plate current of amplifier 7, 8 and thus the impedance of the rectifier network. At a pre-determined input level the anode current of the triode portion of valve 49 is so reduced that a relay 66 falls back and reduces the effectiveness of the impulses delivered by 61 by cutting out parts of the potentiometer. When a pre-determined output level is reached, a three-electrode cold-cathode tube 36 breaks down and applies a negative bias to the amplifier 7, 8 to reduce the impedance of the rectifier network.
