Abstract

537,458. Liquid-pressure engines and meters. HYDRAUTOMAT (1931), Ltd., and SMILLIE, G. Aug. 14, 1940; No. 12981. [Class 69 (ii)] A liquid-pressure engine or meter is constructed with a diaphragm a clamped between discs b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> and bolted to covers c<SP>1</SP>, c the disc b<SP>2</SP> being connected to a connecting-rod d which passes through a stuffing box d<SP>1</SP> and may actuate a pump or counter. The diaphragm chambers are connected alternately to the pressure inlet i and exhaust by means of a slide valve k which is itself controlled by a pilot valve f adapted to be displaced by the diaphragm. The valve k as shown is held by fluid pressure in left-hand position and connects the pressure liquid to the lower diaphragm chamber via pipe o and the upper side to exhaust via pipe p. Pressure liquid also is connected by a pipe l to both ends of the chamber of the valve f but a differential pressure is set up which maintains the valve f in its lower position, this pressure being due to the fact that a guide rod w for the valve is of smaller diameter than a similar rod g attached to the lower end of the valve. These rods pass through packing devices x, v. To the lower rod g is attached a collar g<SP>1</SP> which passes through an adjustable socket t connected to the disc b<SP>2</SP>, and when the diaphragm reaches its uppermost position the collar g<SP>1</SP> is raised in order to cause the pilot valve f to reverse the valve k. When this valve is reversed the fluid pressure can act on the end of the rod g in the upward direction and there is thus a differential pressure tending to hold the valve f in its new position.
