Abstract
537,035. Proofing permeable materials. BARKER, S. G. Aug. 25, 1939, No. 24537. [Class 140] Vegetable fibres, e.g. jute, in the form of felt or fabric are proofed against rot and termites and then impregnated first with a bituminous emulsion and then with a more concentrated bituminous emulsion. Suitable rot-proofing agents are emulsions of copper or zinc linoleates, resinates and naphthenates, "Cuprinol" (Registered Trade Mark), creosote, salicylates, sodium silicofluoride or acetanilide. The bituminous material may be ordinary, oxidized, or blown bitumen, coal tar or pitch. The emulsion may comprise a fibrous filler such as paper pulp and may be precipitated by an electrolyte, e.g. soda alum, or by using an acid rot-proofing material and an alkaline bitumen emulsion. Impregnation may be assisted by first damping with a wetting agent such as "Igepon" T. (Registered Trade Mark) or by adding the wetting agent to the dilute emulsion. The product may be surfaced with molten bitumen, tar or pitch, if desired, with the addition of chlorinated rubber. Oxidized bitumens of M.P. 160-350‹F. are preferred. Talc, chalk or aluminium powder may be applied while the coating is still tacky. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 471,415.
