Abstract

536,851. Agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. INTERNATIONAL LATEX PROCESSES, Ltd., TAYLOR, S. D., MADGE, E. W., and MURPHY, E. A. Feb. 7, 1940, No. 2358. [Class 140] [Also in Group V] Cushioning material comprises sponge-like or cellular rubber made directly from an aqueous rubber dispersion, e.g. latex foam, and having therein in the direction of the normal load column-like structures of thin open-network material made by compacting into sheet form loosely intermingled springy fibres &c., e.g. horsehair, pighair, sisal, glass wool, flexible viscose or other cellulosic or artificial resinous fibres, treated with a resilient adhesive, e.g. an aqueous dispersion of vulcanized or unvulcanized natural or artificial rubber, co-agulated, or waste rubber &c. or concentrates as disclosed in Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70], or rubber cement, cellulose derivative, or a flexible glue. The fibre may be teased into laminar form, sprayed with latex &c. dried, compacted by repeated calendering wound to form tubes, helices &c. and united with the latex foam, e.g. as linings for cavities by slipping such tubes over projections of the mould lid. The rubber of the fibre and the latex are preferably vulcanized together. Alternatively the tubes may be attached together to form a honeycomb structure and submerged in latex foam.
