Abstract
536,235. Thermal switches; actuation of switches. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd., and SHERLOCK, J. E. Nov. 6, 1939, No. 29472. [Class 38 (v)] A switch comprising a movable contact 4 carried by a bi-metallic strip 1, and a contact 7 carried by a fixed member 6, is provided with a spring 15 of " C " or like form dispersed between the fixed and movable members in such a way that when the switch is open it tends to hold the contacts apart with a force which rapidly diminishes as the contacts close, in order to produce a quick make and break action. The spring approaches, but does not pass through, a dead-centre position as the contacts move to the closed position. The spring 15 is held between a pair of pivot points 12 and a single pivot point 14 carried by brackets secured respectively to the members 1 and 6. The operating temperature is controlled by adjusting the fixed contact by rotation of a cam 9, which engages a pin 8 carried by the spring member 6, a depression in the cam providing an "off" position in which the switch remains open. The movement of the strip 1 is limited by adjustable stops 5 and 16, the latter being carried by a bracket mounted on the strip 6.
